What an experience! 🔥🏎️

I headed up to Johnstown Estate for the start of Cannonball Ireland 2026 and it was absolutely incredible. The cars, the atmosphere, the noise and the crowds were something else. 🙌

If you get a chance to catch Cannonball anywhere along the route this weekend, I’d highly recommend it…..well worth seeing!

10 years ago today, on the 8th of August 2016, I fell from the roof of a house. I sustained what’s called a Lisfranc break in the midfoot of my right foot. I broke all the metatarsals across my foot and ended up having surgery, with screws, pins and somewhere around 50 stitches.
I was completely off my feet for months. At the time, I had two young kids, Dylan was 4 and Jack was about 7. I had a mortgage, a business to run and staff depending on me. I had no idea what the next few months were going to look like.
I had to change the way I did everything. I increased my staff numbers to keep the business going, bought a jeep and even learned to drive with my left foot while sitting sideways because I couldn’t use my right. I started on crutches, but eventually the pressure on my shoulders became too much and I ended up using a wheelchair.
I asked the surgeon, and later sought other opinions, the one question that mattered to me:
“Will I ever run again?” I was told I wouldn’t. But anyone who knows me knows that telling me I can’t do something usually has the opposite effect. In 2017, when I was finally able to start moving properly again, I began running on a treadmill.
It wasn’t fast. It wasn’t pretty.
I started small and just kept building.
Eventually I managed a half marathon on that treadmill at around 8-minute kilometres.
Discipline and determination drove me forward. Later that year, I stood on the start line of the Dublin City Marathon and finished it in around 4 hours 9 minutes.
Fast forward to today…
I’ve now run 17 marathons and I’m currently training for my 18th, Dublin in October. There isn’t a morning that goes by that I’m not reminded of that fall when I put my foot on the floor. I still have pain in that foot.
I can choose to bitch and moan about it, or I can get on with it.
I choose to get on with it.
I’m blessed to be alive, and I’m grateful that I’m still able to do what I do. The moral of the story,
When you get knocked down, get back up and do your best.
You never know what you’re capable of until you refuse to accept that something can’t be done.

You can’t outrun a bad diet… and I’m living proof.

754 consecutive days of running later… and I’m actually heavier than when I started.

Running has changed my life. It’s given me discipline, consistency, better mental health, and a purpose. But it also taught me a hard lesson:

You can’t outrun a bad diet.

That’s why this next chapter is different.

I’m on a mission to lose 10kg as I continue my Road to the Dublin City Marathon. No shortcuts. No excuses. Just showing up every day and making better choices.

If you’ve ever thought running alone would fix everything… trust me, I’ve learned the hard way.

Who’s chasing a goal right now? Let me know in the comments. 👇#goals #discipline #weightloss #fypage #consistency taken in Athy by @oneillgeorge

DAY 830 ✅

Headed off to Naas this morning for the Naas Town 10K — and what a wet start it was! 🌧️

Absolutely drowned from head to toe and it was seriously cold getting the warm-up done.

🏃‍♂️ 4.5K warm-up
🏁 Naas Town 10K — around 51:04
🏃‍♂️ 2K cool-down

The weather was so bad I couldn’t get any footage during the race, but it was brilliant to be back in a proper race atmosphere again.

It wasn’t what you’d call a really hilly course, but there were plenty of long drags and it felt like you were climbing for a lot of it. The Strava elevation probably doesn’t do it justice!

Another race done, another day of the streak ticked off.

The message stays the same:

Get up. Get out. Get moving. 💪

DAY 829 ✅

Plans changed about three times today 😂
32K was on, then off, and after a chat with coach Kevin we settled on 12K today and a proper crack at the 10K race tomorrow……4K warm-up, race hard, then 2K cool-down.

Different route today and straight into climbing for the first 5K. Calves were seriously tight and needed a few stops to loosen them out, but once I got over the top and onto the downhill, they finally settled and the rest of the run felt much better.

Now we see what the legs have tomorrow 👀🏃‍♂️

Keep showing up.
Get up. Get out. Get moving.

Happy Saturday 👊

DAY 826 🔥

Tough interval session tonight, and in the video I talk through exactly how it went.

Will I hit my target for Dublin? Probably not. I probably started a little late working with Kevin, and there’s still more work needed to get me where I want to be.

Do I care? Just a little 😂
Have I given it my best effort? Absolutely.

So we keep pushing. Keep showing up. If it takes a little longer to get where I want to be, so be it. We’ll see where this journey takes us.

And never underestimate the value of having a coach. Someone keeping you accountable, looking at the sessions objectively, and being there to discuss what went right, what went wrong, and what comes next. 👊

Get up. Get out. Get moving.

Day 825 🏃🏻‍♂️

Plan today was 10K @ 5:45/km. The first 2K were a bit of a struggle….the legs were still heavy from the weekend….but once I settled into it, everything started to click.

I actually found myself having to hold back at times and finished with an average pace of 5:32/km, feeling strong and with plenty of energy.

Sometimes you stick rigidly to the plan, but sometimes the head needs that little confidence boost outside the plan. Today was one of those days.

I’ve been speaking to a few athletes over the last few days and so many seem to be feeling the same thing right now. We’re only 30-odd days out from the marathon, and this is when the doubts, the demons, the pace worries and all the little struggles start creeping in.

But we’re nearly there. The victory lap is just around the corner. Keep the head up, trust the work you’ve put in and keep showing up.

Get up. Get out. Get moving. 🏃🏻‍♂️

Day 824 🏃🏻‍♂️

35 days to #dublincitymarathon Marathon. 🇮🇪

A quick recap on last week and probably one of the biggest changes I’ve made recently….fueling properly after my runs and throughout the week.

I had been trying to cut calories and drop a bit of weight, but the reality is I was sacrificing energy to do it. With the mileage getting higher and Dublin getting closer, it just doesn’t make sense.

So last week I made a conscious effort to get carbohydrates and proper food into me straight after every run and keep myself fueled between sessions.

The difference was massive. My energy levels were far better throughout the week, I felt stronger in training, and I definitely noticed it going into yesterday’s 30K long run.

So for now, the calorie cutting is getting knocked on the head. The priority for the next 35 days is training, recovery, fueling properly and getting to that start line in the best shape possible.

The weight can wait until after Dublin.

Discipline over motivation.

🏃🏻‍♂️ LONG RUN REPORT-30KM ✅ | 84KM WEEK

Biggest training week I’ve put in for years, 84km in the bank, finished off with 30km today.

Dylan had football this morning, so an early start wasn’t an option. Once we got home, I rested up, dropped my water bottles along the route and got moving.

The plan was to keep the first 10km controlled. First 9km averaged around 6:01/km, respecting the climbs rather than chasing pace.

I had a toilet stop around 5km, then hit the first decent hill. Another longer climb came around 7.5-9km, where I kept things controlled before letting the legs naturally roll on the downhill into the 5:30s/km.

The biggest climb came roughly 14-16km. I deliberately pulled it back to around 6:20/km, no point burning matches halfway through a 30k.

At the top I still felt great. From there I let the downhills work for me, ticking off plenty of 5:20–5:40/km running.

Fueling was consistent: gel every 5km, water throughout, bottles grabbed on the move.

21km, feeling great.
25km, still strong.
27km, the 18°C heat finally started biting, so I respected the climbs and stayed controlled.

30km done. ✅

The biggest difference this week has been nutrition. I’ve focused on getting carbs in straight after runs, eating breakfast and properly replacing what I’m burning.

I’ve backed off trying to force weight loss because the calorie deficit was starting to affect my training energy.

Today was a good reminder: you can’t expect your body to perform if you don’t fuel it properly.

84km. Biggest week in years. Another one in the bank. 👊

Get up. Get out. Get moving.

Day 822 ✅

Happy Saturday! 15K done today at a target pace of 5:30/km. 🏃🏻‍♂️💨

Very windy conditions out there, so probably burning through a little more fuel than I’d like ahead of tomorrow’s 30K long run.

I’m trying out a new fueling strategy this weekend, so fingers crossed it works 🤞 I’ll report back tomorrow and let you know how I got on.

The road to Dublin continues… 🇮🇪🏃🏻‍♂️

Day 818 ✅ 12KM Easy Run.

Being 100kg+, running in the heat definitely doesn’t help me! 🥵

Tonight was completely different, around 16°C but feeling closer to 10°C, and I felt great. 🙌 The drop in temperature makes a massive difference for me + the boss joined me for last 6km having a bit of company definitely helps!

I keep saying because it’s important to know It’s not motivation that gets me out the door day in and day out……it’s discipline. 💪

The message stays the same…

Get up. Get out. Get moving.
