In Senegal, there is a saying: “Nit nitay garabam” — a person is another person’s remedy. Our lives are shaped, for better or worse, by those around us. For Battling Siki, born Louis M’barick Fall in 1897 in Saint-Louis, this truth defined his path. From mentors who built his skills, to crowds that lifted him, and forces that tried to drag him down, his story was a fight shaped by people as much as by punches.

Brought to France as a child in the care of a French actress, Siki entered the ring at 15. His rise paused during World War I, when he served with distinction in the French Army, earning the Croix de Guerre and Médaille Militaire. Returning to boxing, he developed a relentless “windmill” style and built a strong record.

On September 24, 1922, at Paris’s Buffalo Velodrome, he faced world and European light heavyweight champion Georges Carpentier. Contemporary reports describe how Siki floored Carpentier twice before knocking him out in the sixth round. Initially disqualified, he was reinstated after crowd protests, becoming the first African-born world boxing champion.

Flamboyant and outspoken, Siki drew headlines for his lavish spending, pet lion, and refusal to stay silent about racism or boxing corruption. On March 17, 1923, he defended his title against Irishman Mike McTigue in Dublin during the Irish Civil War. Fighting in poor weather, with gunfire reportedly audible, Siki lost by controversial decision.

After losing his European title, he moved to the United States but failed to reclaim top form. On December 15, 1925, aged 28, he was found shot twice in the back in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen. His death was ruled a homicide; the case remains unsolved.

Brief though it was, Siki’s career broke barriers and defied injustice. He lived the truth of “Nit nitay garabam” shaped by allies, adversaries, and the battles they brought leaving a legacy that still inspires.
