STOP THROWING AWAY YOUR KITCHEN WASTE

Week 3: Gelatin Leather

This week, I’m showing you how to turn powdered gelatin and organic waste into a structural jacket.

This process explores the intersection of material innovation and circular design. By adding a substrate (like coffee grounds or eggshells), we aren’t just making a texture; we are recycling waste into wearable art.

Full recipe is in the video. Screenshot it. Study it. Make it.

What substrate should I test next? Drop your weirdest ideas in the comments.

Welcome to my fashion lab where things don’t have to sit perfectly to make sense. Sometimes I’m deep in material research, and sometimes I’m sitting on a chair squeezing an orange like it’s part of the creative process (because honestly… it kind of is).

I explore textiles the same way I move through life: with curiosity, instinct, and the occasional ā€œlet’s just see what happens.ā€ Every piece I make grows out of my heritage, my experiments, and whatever material I’m currently trying to understand (from sea fibers to backyard findings to whatever texture is calling louder that week).

I’m not here to reinvent fashion. I’m here to build things that feel rooted. That kind of beauty that shows up when you let things be themselves.

I guess this is slow fashion, cultural memory, handmade work with a pulse, or my diary of ideas that spark…

Look 2: Seamoss spirulina jacket
This jacket started as a pattern puzzle — endless cuts and careful alignment — and turned into a study in texture and tone. The way the pieces sit next to each other gives it this glass-mosaic effect, like stained glass but made from biomaterials and fabric instead of glass.

The Hyper-Local Jacket.
I was so excited to showcase this PNW kelp jacket.
It was an intentional piece, and truly one of my favorites.

While traditional leather gets all the hype and synthetic polyester causes all the drama, this Kelp and Seamoss biopolymer jacket is just over here quietly revolutionizing sustainable fashion. Ocean-derived, fully bio-based, and holding the entire outfit together.

Expanding the finestampa design language through our outerwear collaboration with Uncaged Innovations.

This black, structured jacket using a sustainable biomaterial made of grains, rather than plastic or petroleum. Check them out for actual vegan, sustainable leather. @uncagedinnovations

The piece features hand-stitched and embroidered detailing, merging this durable, bio-based leather alternative with our signature raw, intentional edge. Styled with dark wide-leg trousers and pointed boots against a classic lowrider, this look directly cements our vision for modern alternative streetwear.

Also, thank you @mediumscollective for the ride.

Defining the finestampa aesthetic. This crochet dress is crafted from an experimental, sustainable biomaterial blend of sea moss, alginate, and wool. I’m actively narrowing down my design language to hit that exact intersection of sensual, avant-garde design and raw, edgy alternative fashion. Ejay completely killed this look.

A summary of the Runway.

Thank you so much @nmk.jpg
You are brilliant.

Finestampa is a regenerative alternative to fast fashion: fusing precision bio-fabrication, sea moss biopolymers, real botanicals, and upcycled textiles into zero-waste wearable art. Every piece carries manual hand-embroidery designed to bridge ecological responsibility with streetwear.

A profound lesson I’ve learned from Gabo is that heritage, advanced technology, and material innovation can co-exist without compromise.

While my studio practice is deeply rooted in developing new biopolymers, this look is an exercise in rescuing materials and telling heritage stories. This structured jacket is built completely from upcycled leather, meticulously pieced together to mirror the rhythm and movement of traditional Peruvian indigenous stripe weaving.

To complete the look, I paired it with Gabo’s handbag from his Ancestral Future collection.

Circular design is simply a modern framework for the resourcefulness our ancestors always practiced.

Research in public: finding permanence in materials meant to return to the earth.

This piece is constructed entirely from hand-cast sea moss bioleather, wool, and agar formulation engineered for both tactile flexibility and architectural hold. Developing this matrix requires careful casting and curing, but the true soul of the garment lies in its colorway. The deep, oxidized burgundies, warm ochres, and shadowed earth tones are a direct nod to my roots: drawn from Vinicunca, Peru’s Mountain of Seven Colors, and translated into a moody, high-contrast palette.

To emphasize the panels, I bound every seam with a heavy contrast whipstitch. It is a highly intentional, labor-intensive process that honors traditional hand-craftsmanship while pushing the boundaries of what compostable, regenerative fashion can look and feel like.

This piece reimagines structural silhouettes by engineering compostable sea moss leather into wearable art, proving that regenerative materials can be bold.

The vest has painted botanical elements within a translucent bio-leather matrix, framed by lace detailing.

Achieving this level of clarity requires refining the sea moss extraction to minimize air bubbles and sediment.

Base: 60% Sea moss carrageenan extract + 40% agar-agar for structural stiffness
