iFall is my debut original, and I hope you'll listen for at least 30 seconds 🥺

Fans of skatepunk bands such as Lagwagon, A Wilhelm Scream, No Use For A Name, Strung Out, Bad Religion, Propagandhi, and other melodic hardcore adjacent music may or may not like this song. We'll see 😂

One More For Zero is not so much of a "band" as it is the passion project of a 41 year old father of 5 and punk rock lifer. The goal is not just to write and record skatepunk music, but to also improve at recording and producing.

When I went to Japan last month, I fell in love with these figures called Daruma (だるま) ⛩️

The point of the Daruma is to pick a goal, paint its left eye, and leave the right eye unpainted until you have completed your goal 👁️

You are meant to place the Daruma in a place where you will see it regularly, and the single eye will remind you to keep moving towards and complete your goal 🏋️‍♂️

Some people like to write a goal down on paper and put it inside the Daruma as well ✍️

The coolest part about the Daruma is that it isn’t meant to be some magic solution, but instead it is to serve as a personal reminder of the incomplete task- more of a form of motivation from within 😉

It is tied in with the Japanese proverb “fall seven times, get up eight.” 🤔

The purple Daruma is one that is often used for creative pursuits, and that is why I chose it to set my next goal for this music project 🎵

It is my genuine dream to eventually record an album, but at the pace I write and record, that would take a LONG time, so I came up with this idea:

Since another aspect of the Daruma is that the goal set is traditionally intended to be accomplished within a year, I got the idea to set a goal to put out a total of 6 original songs- not as an EP, but as a collection I’m calling “Daruma.” 📅

I have already released my first original “iFall” and am working hard on my second song “The West Was Never Won” which I am aiming to have out by August 🤠

I think getting 4 more songs out by next June is a realistic but challenging goal, and I’m excited to keep this Daruma on top of my “studio” monitor to be there for this whole journey! 🎸🎤

I also made it into my new pfp to remind me of this goal every time I’m scrolling on Instagram 👀

I look forward to releasing these songs every few months until I complete my goal, paint the second eye, and figure out what’s next 📻

The song playing here is the new single “Prove It” by @gametime_kc which I am using as a personal mantra for this project!

The Kids Are All Wrong

Super stoked to share this Lagwagon cover!

Let’s Talk About Feelings was without a doubt the album that has made the biggest impact on me throughout my life, and is something that I hold sacred, so making this cover was very cathartic.

I figured since this song comes right before May 16, why not put it out on May 15th? Also, how cool is it that May 16 actually falls on a Saturday this year!

As a 41 year old father of 5, I can really see that hour glass starting to shift to “half full.” I always dreamed of putting out music, but just never got around to it- plus, I’ve always been insecure about singing. I’m sure a ton of people can relate and overcoming these things is what this project is all about.

I’m as DIY as it gets, and figuring this all out as I go, and I appreciate anyone that listens to what I’m doing.

When making this video, I was super stoked to wear my 2009 Joey Cale Bridge tour shirt. It’s signed, so I’ve never worn it, but it went right back into the bag after I finished 😂 Call me a fan boy, I really don’t care.

No offense intended by my crappy photoshop edit of the Feelings artwork. Mark deSalvo is prolific and the album art goat. He even designed my favorite album art ever which is NUFAN’s Making Friends.

A big shout out to my lifelong friends in @myenemy_band for recording vocals and just being all around awesome and inspiring musicians.

Looking into the future, I hope to keep releasing songs, and I am aiming to have my second original out late summer.

Headed up to the roof of a condo I manage to enjoy the heavy breeze and make a couple announcements 🌬️

First, my new song “The West Was Never Won” is only a week away! Took way longer than I thought it would, but the last couple months got unexpectedly busy 💿

Second, I’ve simultaneously started working on my cover for the upcoming @coffincurserecords Dolly Parton compilation. I’m so grateful that they let me be a part of this awesome cause, and I hope everyone enjoys what I put together! I’ll announce the song as it gets closer 🤠

Thanks to anyone who has listened to my stuff so far. I plan on putting out many more songs and improving at the craft to hopefully speed up the process a bit 🙏🤘

Here’s a small sample of some of the guitar in my upcoming song “The West Was Never Won”

As a solo artist, my process for writing songs usually starts with a melody from which I write chords with an acoustic guitar. Basically a folk song at that point!

Next thing I do it use @guitarpro_official to input the melody, and get to creativity writing the traditional “two guitars and bass” parts that most of the skate punk bands I love use. This is a lot of fun, but without the Guitar Pro software, I would never remember these parts. I also write all the vocal harmony parts which comes in clutch when it’s time to record- nothing to figure out on the fly.

My next step is exporting everything I did in Guitar Pro to MIDI, open it in Pro Tools, and write the drum parts using the MIDI guitar/bass/melody as a guide.

I do own and play drums, but I am frankly not good enough at them to play the parts I write up to speed- plus I want the drums as tight as possible since I am primarily a guitar player. Creating the drum parts takes a lot of time since I focus on authentic playing and do quite a bit of detail in velocity etc.

That brings me to the current step- learning to actually play the guitar and bass parts I wrote along with feeling out the nuances of how they fit with the drums.

Once I get the guitar parts tight (not quite there, but almost) I record them and get ready for vocals!

Still aiming to get this one out by the end of next month, but no promises 😂

A lot of not a lot going on, but that’s still a lot if you compare it to nothing 🤔

Working on my next original “The West Was Never Won” which will be out ASAP (aka August).

Excited to announce that I will be curating a playlist on Spotify and YouTube which I am calling “Inspiration Super Station.” This playlist will feature songs that have made a big impact on me as a musician and songwriter, and there are A LOT. I’m really excited to document what I love about these songs and where in my life they came to find me.

Again, thanks to everyone who has listened to@what I’m doing. It means the world to me, and even having one person stoked on music I’ve made is 100% worth it. It’s honestly more than I could ask for, so thank you!

Fanboy moment, but I threw on my never worn @joeycapeofficial signed 2009 Bridge Tour shirt to film the video for my cover of The Kids Are All Wrong.

In additional to seeing Lagwagon 10 or so times, I have gotten to see Joey Cape acoustic 4 times.

Tampa was the first stop on the Bridge tour, and am stoked to have this memory!

COMING THIS FRIDAY!!!

Super stoked to cover a song off of my favorite album of all time “Let’s Talk About Feelings” by Lagwagon.

I chose to cover this song for two reasons:
1. It’s short and I wanted to release another song quickly!
2. I wanted to do a song I could put my own spin on, and I can assure you, this is a lot different than the original 😅
