Today, I'm thrilled to share JAY TO THE WORLD by Donna Andrews, which comes out November 10. This is a really fun holiday-themed mystery with an engaging case and great characters!

Synopsis:

There's merry mischief aplenty in Donna Andrews' latest avian-themed Christmas mystery!

The Christmas season is underway in Caerphilly. The members of the Hollingsworth clan, Meg’s mother’s family, are beginning to arrive in force, and Mother has several special projects underway this year. One is the playhouse she’s having built for Brynn, her two-year-old granddaughter. Brynn is a bright, lively child who loves animals, especially a wounded jay that she and Meg are trying to rehabilitate. She’s also hoping to play matchmaker and set up her cousin with an old friend of hers who was recently widowed.

But all is not going smoothly in Caerphilly. Someone vandalizes the playhouse and sets a dangerous trap that injures and could have killed Mother. She reveals that she has been getting nasty anonymous letters, and it’s obvious that someone is targeting her. Meg realizes she has to do something to figure out who could possibly have it in for her mom.

Meg juggles holiday preparations and celebrations while investigating these potential enemies – not to mention helping repair the damaged playhouse, taking her turn at nursing the wounded jay, and trying to coax Mother’s elderly cousin into a reunion with his long-lost love. When one of Meg’s suspects is found dead under suspicious circumstances, the family rejoices that Mother is out of danger. But Meg isn’t quite sure they’re out of the woods just yet.

My Review:

EMPIRE is a beautifully written and intricately woven story that concludes the HEIR duology well. This book picks up where the first left off, beginning with a nice summary reminder of the events in the first book. Even though it had been a while since I read the first book, I was able to get into the story from the start and thoughtful reminders throughout helped to give context for the first book without overwhelming the current story.

The book follows a number of characters in alternating points-of-view, which works so well. The book primarily follows Cero, Karinna, Quil, Aiz, and Sirsha with each perspective feeling full and easy to pick up at each labeled chapter. They are all written in the third person, which also helps. Each of the characters are easy to understand and empathize with. Even when the reader does not agree with their decisions, it is clear why they made the decisions they did and they become understandable. This morality and villain vs hero element makes for a powerful theme that echoes for our current world and histories. The perspective and the background of decisions can make villains think they are heroes in their own worlds, and the perspectives help to showcase these nuances.

Another strong/interesting theme is around pain and its ability to transform, particularly for children. This plays out with Sirsha and her past, as well as Cero/Aiz and the things they have faced that have shaped them in the present. Likewise, Div and her connection to Sirsha and what created her become a search that spans the pages with a horrifying reveal of who she is and her past that blends tragedy and poor decisions. 👇 by @onemused
