törtqulaq
⠀
ornament is one of the oldest forms of art, a language of shapes and symbols passed down through generations. for kazakhs, it has always been more than decoration. it reflects our way of life, our beliefs, and our connection to nature.

kazakh ornament is rich with meaning. geometric, floral, and animal motifs aren’t just patterns, they carry stories, values, and even protection. one of the symbols i’ve drawn is törtqulaq, a traditional motif made of four symmetrical curls. it symbolizes harmony, protection, and the unity of the four cardinal directions. to many, it also represents the endless flow of life and connection with the universe.

rooted in the ancient saka animal style, kazakh ornament often includes horns, wings, claws, and beaks, totemic elements meant to guard and guide. before the 19th century, ornament was the core of kazakh artistic expression, found on clothing, jewelry, yurts, tools - everywhere. it was how we told our stories and carried our culture forward.

with this piece, i’m continuing that story. 🧿
