My new quilt project is a Quilt-A-Long/QAL on Colour Study with designer @alisonglass.

I love all good 🌈 quilt project and this is worked in small, manageable pieces each week. I’ll be choosing fabrics entirely from my small stash and using a dark denim for my background colour.

We’re in the middle of a September Heat Wave which isn’t very good for knitting or wearing wool sweaters but it will perfect for allowing this fresh knit to dry.

My latest quilt was delivered this week and opened up during a video call this afternoon. What JOY to know it will be loved by @a.sider27

This quilt was a lot of fun with 224 HSTs (half square triangles) and a beautiful Layer Cake of fabric from a friend in my Quilt Club.

Colour theory is wild.

Both of these Churn Dash quilt blocks use exactly the same shapes, it is only the use of colour that changes the way our eyes read the pattern.

The Churn Dash quilt block is an old pattern dating back to the 1800s and reminded Quilters of a Butter Churn, the triangle and rectangles represent the churn and the square in the middle represents the dasher (or stick) used to churn butter. by @onestitchbyheather

I wish all math was Quilt Math.

I remember learning about patterns in Grade 1 with Mrs. Rush. I loved using the colourful geometric stickers to create ABAB or AABAAB on a grid and watching different patterns evolve.

Quilting is a lot like that memory. There are so many beautiful possibilities with just a little turn of the square or the addition of a new fabric. by @onestitchbyheather

Quilts don’t just happen.

There’s a lot of planning involved to make just the right fabric combinations. Today was all about figuring out the Lights and Darks and creating the best contrasts.

A lot is intuitive to me… but also requires photos back and forth with my creative friends!

THIS IS THE BACK

The back of this quilt is just as pretty as the front so this tag is a cute embellishment. Each of the coloured fabrics are leftovers from the fabric used on the front of the quilt. Each small scrap was arranged to create a new pattern and the result is stunning.

The only fabric remaining from this quilt is the small 2x2 inch square that I couldn’t fit into my grid and a long 1 inch strip I mis-cut. Both will be saved and added to my scraps for another project. by @onestitchbyheather

This sweet little lap sized quilt is a 3 Yard Quilt from the book Quilts in a Jiffy by @fabriccafe

The border was a lucky find in a bag of scraps from my Quilt Group and it really ties the colours all together.

These colours are outside my usual choices of crazy 🌈 but they sing all the same in the Spring sun. by @onestitchbyheather

This quilt was STITCHED WITH L🩷VE.

A fellow Guild member showed a similar quilt that become my inspiration for the design.

Scrappy String Quilts have stolen my heart!

This time I included sashing (the blue denim borders) and used a Quilt As You Go/QAYG technique as outlined in one of @justgetitdonequilts videos which allowed me to make the entire quilt on my own (rather than send the “quilt sandwich” to someone else to finish).

There was lots of learning in this quilt and I’m thankful for my friend cheering me on to the end.
