The origin story of One Wardrobe. After graduating uni, I wanted a summer of fun without any casual work before entering the corporate world. I’d watched my dad commute from the Shire to the city my whole life, and I could feel the doom and gloom of my freedom coming to an end (RIP unlimited annual leave). At the time, fashion rental was a brand new concept with only a handful of small-scale businesses. I had the idea to rent out my wardrobe on Instagram to my local community to fund my summer escapades. I invested $1000 to buy a few new pieces and a clothing rack so people could try them on in the spare room of my parents’ house. The idea had legs - it lasted past my three-month holiday experiment. Over the next few years, it grew organically in the background while I built my career in fashion, e-commerce and marketing. Those early years were all about educating twenty-somethings on why they should spend their hard-earned money hiring for a one-time wear rather than buying cheap, fast fashion. Most people couldn’t afford designer clothing at the time, and for those who could, it was taboo to admit they hired their outfit. It’s crazy how much this has changed over the past ten years - now hiring is mainstream and spending $1000 on a dress is almost seen as irresponsible. Fast forward to 2022: I was burnt out at my job and questioning what it was all for. I now had the skills, confidence and a business I loved right in front of me but it wasn’t inclusive, with most of my stock in my own size. Having to constantly buy brand new styles in every size didn’t feel sustainable or financially viable. I wanted to give back and share my success with other women by building a platform that let them monetise their wardrobes too. It had such a positive financial impact on my life, and I knew it could do the same for other women. After 18 months of relentless planning and building, One Wardrobe launched with 400 styles, powered by a handful of incredible lenders. Today, we have 10,000+ styles, 300+ lenders and a small but mighty team helping thousands of women share, hire and earn.
