All three comps are qualifiers for 2027 USS Nationals.

Registrations are up on Iron Podium. Can’t wait to see everybody this year!

If your back yard doesn’t happen to have a Hercules Hold in it, here are a few ideas for how you can to train for it.

And, if you’re looking for a competition with a Hercules Hold, we’ve got two coming up this year:
October 3 - Illinois Strongest Man & Woman (St. Anne, IL)
December 6 - A Very Strongman Christmas 5 (Kankakee, IL)

Registration for both competitions is on Iron Podium, and both shows are qualifiers for 2027 USS Nationals. by @onewaystrength

Don’t just quickly grab the handles of the Hercules Hold, cup your hands around and get a really solid grip so you can hold as long as possible. by @onewaystrength

This one is gone be epic! Head over to Iron Podium and grab your spot!

-5 axle overhead medley
-5 deadlift ladder: 3 from the ground, 2 from blocks at 18”, ending with Flintstone deadlift
-Max time Hercules Hold
-Max distance natural stone carry (choice of 2 stones)

All athletes compete in their weight class, plus all scores are compared for the overall titles of Illinois Strongest Woman and Illinois Strongest Man

Events go in reverse order of entries received, so the sooner you sign up, the more people you get to watch go before you. Watch their mistakes and see what you need to do.

This is a qualifier for 2027 USS Nationals, and you’ll need a 2026 United States Strongman membership to compete.

Don’t rush your Log Press! After the clean, you may be in a mad dash to get the log off of you. But, if you’re not set up well, that rush might make you fail the lift.

A good setup can make a huge difference for all of your strongman events. Oftentimes, athletes are looking for the next shiny thing to help their lifts, when focusing on the basics would actually help them tremendously. by @onewaystrength

Don’t be fighting for your life to return your squat bar to the J-cups when you finish your set. Take a minute to adjust to the height you need (and don’t just leave it where the last person had it because you don’t feel like adjusting it).

We suggest a little bit lower pickup just in case your bar slides down slightly, you bend over a little, or you get compressed under all the weight. by @onewaystrength

Don’t wait until you have several hundred pounds on your back to cha-cha-cha into your best foot position. Set up your squat stance before you lift the bar from the rack, and slide one step back with each foot. When it’s time to put the bar back, it’s a safe and easy trip back to the J-cups.

We normally use a narrower foot position for strongman training to strengthen up the position commonly used in events. If you’re a wide squatter, we’d recommend using the same setup and then moving each foot wider when in position, rather than stepping back with a super-wide stance. Ideally though, a monolift or monolift attachment is the safest option for very wide squats. by @onewaystrength

Blue skies of DOOM! The sun on your face, the breeze on your axle… the open sky with absolutely nothing to focus your eyes on.. 😵‍💫 Outdoor comps can be a lot of fun, but they can definitely feel different from your indoor training.
This is your reminder to take some equipment out, and get prepped for lifting outside! by @onewaystrength

Need to add some conditioning to your strongman training? Here’s a fun one: standing sled pull to sled drag. Do it for a few rounds to get a great workout, and beef up your grip strength too. Occasionally, you’ll even see this one in a competition (though it’s not as popular as a seated pull).
Bonus points if you have a dog you can pet on your way back to pull again. by @onewaystrength

Don’t let weak wrists hold you back on your strongman events. Hand, wrist, and forearm training can really help your performance, and we’re always on the lookout for new exercises.
Equipment designed for arm wrestling can be great for this kind of training. @multilinguish showed us the WristMax at a training session last year, and we liked it enough to buy one ourselves (you can find it on Amazon). The movement is very similar to scooping a sandbag, Atlas Stone, or Natural Stone. We might even buy a second one to use at the same time. by @onewaystrength
