This cemetery is also one of the most unique outdoor sculpture galleries in the U.S. 🪦

Hope Cemetery in Barre, Vermont, has been open since 1895. It’s home to more than 10,000 tombstones all made from local “Barre Gray” granite, which is used to make roughly one out of every three gravestones in the entire United States.

What makes it unlike any other cemetery isn’t just the shape of the tombstones, but the fact that most of the stones were carved by the people buried here.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Italian and Scottish immigrants who came to Barre to work as stonecutters in the local quarries treated their own gravestones as final masterpieces—mainly because they knew they’d likely never grow old. It was common for workers to develop silicosis, a deadly respiratory disease caused by years of inhaling granite dust, which gave the town an unusually high death rate.

On a stroll through the cemetery today, you can see an incredible variety of tombstones both old and new, including those shaped like a smiley face, a soccer ball, a plane, a car, a house, a book, a violin, and even a reproduction of a sculpture by Michelangelo.
