The loudest track in the hard techno top 100 is literally called « LOUDERRR » 😅

So I ran the whole top 100 through a loudness meter. The average? −5 LUFS. 87 of them clip past 0 dBTP.

Stop killing your track’s loudness before it even hits mastering.

Honestly it’s not that complicated, there are just a few tricks worth knowing.

Getting a master as loud as possible always comes down to decisions made way earlier: the instruments you pick, how you place them, how they interact.

Get these few things right and mastering becomes a formality. The track comes out competitive.

So stop thinking loudness is made at the master. It’s anticipated much earlier, in the sound design and the mix. Mastering just finishes the job and pulls the most out of the track’s potential.

The kind of message I get every week. And I’m well aware of it: everyone wants their track to sound louder than the rest.

It’s nothing new, and it’s not just a techno thing. What most people don’t realise is that a track’s loudness potential comes down to a whole set of choices made long before mastering. Not every track can reach -5 LUFS, and that’s OK.

Loudness is built from the earliest stages of production, in the elements you choose and the way they fit together.

Mastering is there to refine those choices and get the most out of the track without ever pushing past its potential. A master forced too hard quickly becomes tiring, harsh, and kills the groove.

So let’s stop chasing a target number, and start getting the most out of each track instead.
