Those last three inches on the erg are costing your rower speed on the water.

Here’s the disconnect nobody talks about: the way most juniors finish the stroke on the rowing machine has nothing to do with how a boat actually moves. They yank the handle into the body, lean back too far, and chase the number on the monitor. Anatomically, it’s the wrong pattern. It builds habits that fall apart the moment they get back in the single or the eight.

Winter is when those habits get locked in. Spring is when they show up on the water.

I’m Xeno Müller. Three-time Olympian in the single scull, Olympic gold in Atlanta, silver in Sydney, and I still hold the fastest final 500-meter split ever rowed. I’ve spent the last twenty-plus years teaching junior rowers to erg the way the boat wants to be rowed, so the erg score improves and the boat speed comes with it.

This how you can obliterate a person with a bigger erg score on the water. I was shorter and heavier than my competitors. The only way to Olympic victory was through superior technique.
