Sophirat is a self-taught artist, Sophirat draws inspiration from peoples’ stories, nature, and subcultures. Her work emphasizes issues of marginalization of various groups within affluent urban centers like Bangkok.

Le Déjeuner sur l‘herbe (The Luncheon on the Grass) is a photography series inspired by Édouard Manet, which depicted a prostitute and challenged traditional conceptions of art during 1862. Sophirat emphasizes how historical themes are still relevant today. Sophirat works with sex workers and sexologists to confront the continuous devaluation and lack of rights experienced by this profession, which is still ignored by both the state and society.

Sophirat’s work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally, including her recent solo exhibition Decentralized Thainess at 333 Gallery (Bangkok, 2024) and prior exhibitions such as Ecopsychology (Objectifs, Singapore, 2019) and Interpreters (MOCA, Bangkok 2022).

THE ROOM WE MAKE
What we inherit. What we transform. What we leave behind.

We inherit more than a name, a language, or a family. We also inherit beliefs, cultural values, and expectations about who we are supposed to be.

For queer people, the meanings of family, home, and belonging can be more complicated. How do we live with what we have inherited when it does not reflect who we truly are?

Within the exhibition space, furniture and objects connected to home, family, and memory coexist with fresh flowers that gradually change over time. From their initial bloom to their eventual withering and disappearance, the flowers remind us that nothing remains in the same form forever.

The same can be said of what we inherit from our families and cultures. We may choose to preserve some things, transform others, or allow certain things to come to an end without passing everything on to the next generation.

Through photography, painting, drawing, textiles, and abstraction, the artists explore objects, bodies, spaces, and memories, examining the relationship between identity and the forces that shape us, as well as the possibility of creating spaces where we can exist on our own terms.

The Room We Make does not ask what we should inherit, but what we choose to do with what we have inherited.

We may not have chosen the room we were born into, but we still have the possibility of making a room of our own.

First of all, a big thank you to everyone for your trust, kindness, and for giving me the opportunity to work with QueerFrames Lab. It has been a wonderful experience, and I’m truly grateful to have been part of this journey. 🤍

Being part of the Charity Art Auction Gala this year was such a meaningful experience for me. As an artist contributing a piece to the auction, I felt like I was sharing not just my work, but also my story and intentions within a space filled with generosity and support.

It was truly moving to see my artwork alongside fellow artists and among all the people who came together for this cause. Thank you to everyone whose support turned art into a force of sharing and equality
