Little moments In a sea of heads, she stood out, quite astonishingly. On her was probably every colour of the rainbow, but that wasn’t what made her stand out. She just seemed … warm. Like a person you looked at and saw comfort, and perhaps, trust. Her hair was curly. Silky. Full. Very nice. I walked briskly past her and noticed it. The bump! I couldn’t resist the urge to say what instantly played out in my head, me being the impulsive person that I am. I blurted out how beautiful her baby would be. She smiled. Genuinely. So did her boyfriend. Well, the person I assumed was her boyfriend. Fiancé ? Well, I didn’t notice a ring. I hope she delivers a baby as beautiful as they both look. Healthy, too. And that the world they, the baby, come to inhabit will be a safe and happy one. I doubt the last one, though, not with everything else going on in our world today. 1332, Baker Street, London. My Reflection : THE THINGS WE NEVER SAY Reading this book once again reminded me that things are rarely as they seem. Hidden beneath the surface are the silent , yet deafening greys of life; truths that linger in the background, waiting to be acknowledged. Artie and Evie’s marriage is a perfect example. The signs of Evie’s disloyalty were always there: her dismissiveness towards Artie, the growing distance between them, and Rob, their son, who bore little resemblance to him. Yet what stayed with me most was Artie’s quiet awareness. Knowing that Rob was not biologically his, he chose not to confront Evie with the truth. Even now, I remain unsure how I feel about that decision. Was it an act of love, resignation, forgiveness, or simply a desire to preserve what remained of his family? What makes the novel so compelling is its refusal to offer easy answers. Instead, it invites readers to sit with the complexities of human relationships and the things left unsaid. It captures the messiness of love, betrayal, loyalty, and family with remarkable sensitivity. Most moving of all is the relationship between Artie and Rob. In the end, biology becomes secondary to the bond they shared. Artie may not have been Rob’s father by blood, but he was undoubtedly his true father in every way that mattered. That relationship gives the story its emotional heart and makes the journey worthwhile. THIS MOTHERLESS LAND This Motherless Land is filled with interesting and diverse characters, brought to life through Nikki May’s brilliant writing. Take Margot, for example — a true “Margot” in every sense of the word. I suspect most of us have met someone like her. I certainly work with one: vindictive, bitter, insecure, dripping with bile and, quite frankly, just an unhappy person. Why? Who knows. Some people are simply wired that way. Then there’s Lizzie — or Lissie, as a Yoruba speaker might say 😆. Warm, personable, and impossibly beautiful, she radiates kindness and carries the sort of heart you rarely encounter. Hard to believe she and Margot are sisters, right? I thought so too! Margot embodies the worst of human nature: greedy, resentful of sharing, and determinedly unpleasant. Lizzie, on the other hand, shines as her complete opposite — light where Margot is shadow. Of course, that’s just a slice of what this novel is about, but it shows how richly May captures human flaws and virtues.
