This weeks film club - Paradise: Hope by Ulrich Seidl

Fat Girl Love: The Unglamourised Lolita

I can’t remember how I stumbled across Paradise: Hope, only that I put off watching it for a while. I’m not sure why. If Lolita is Sex and the City, then this film is Girls: good, but often uncomfortable; compelling precisely because of its ugliness. It’s the sort of thing you find yourself recommending with a caveat. You will probably be a little repulsed by it at first. You may grow to love it anyway.

The film almost feels as though its protagonist, thirteen-year-old Melanie, has read Lolita after discovering it on Tumblr, picking through the romantic fragments while ignoring everything rotten underneath. Like many girls encountering Nabokov too young, she mistakes being desired for desire itself. All the sickness, manipulation and loneliness are eclipsed by the simple fantasy of being wanted.

HOW DIRECTORS DRESS

Independent production house A24 breathes a distinct insight into what the books subjects would consider normality - How Directors Dress uses fashion to explore compelling stories about infamous film directors, their work and the eras they lived amongst.

Featuring over 200 archival photographs, the book presents striking imagery of what directors wear to work, deepening the intersection between fashion and film. From Sofia Coppola’s iconic button-up shirts to Spike Lee’s caps and varsity jackets - How Directors Dress offers a unique insider view of a directors creative process and how their garments live within that.

Together, the text and archival imagery transports us into the world of various directors - the pages guide us from set, to the edit, then eventually to the red carpet - offering a worldly view of the methods behind the madness.

Between the bind is a series by ONSETT, breaking down the stories between the pages of our favourite books.

The @sofiacoppola Archive acts as personal memoir to her extension and influential career in film. Sharing personal collections of photographs between the years of 1999 to 2023, we see life through Sofia’s visions, behind the lens.

Painting a backdrop of her influences through ephemera, the hardback volume reflects her most defining bodies of work, including The Virgin Suicides (1999), Lost in Translation (2003), Marie Antoinette (2006) and Priscilla (2023).

The book embodies femininity, from the muted pastels to the clothes she’s captured in - a feeling of imperfection lays to rest between the bind, as we are transported through an authentic reflection of Coppola’s interests. by @onsettmag

This is between the bind, a series by ONSETT - breaking down the stories between the pages of our favourite books.

The streets of Medellín are a space of life, energy, and freedom - and Photographer @isaaac.co.uk captured this exact energy during his visit to Columbia.

Marking @stoneisland FW26 collection, the Italian house sent Lamb and archivist @arco_maher to not spectate, but to witness the culture from the ground of ‘the pilotos’ - the pilots or drivers.

In Colombia’s city of the eternal spring, a powerful subculture known as “Los Pikes” have transformed the streets into their own stage, championing moto-culture as more than a sport - but more an expression of identity. Performing complex and often dangerous stunts, amassing a cult like following - as each individual brings a unique character to the tricks they execute.

The book guides you through the community as if you were a local, rather than a spectator. Telling the tales of those within this world and why they do what they do.

From double page spreads capturing the intimacy of the act, to polaroids headshots from inside the home - almost bringing their subculture from the streets to inside their places of solace.

Published by @friendeditions , the book holds a personable, familiar feel to something that could seem so distance to what many of us know.

Pages dissect the personalities of the Los Pikes, championing gender and generation representation. And finely pairing this with selective styling from Maher, having each piece reflect the kinetic energy of the stunt crew members - turning the streets into a stage for Stone Island’s technical functionality, paired with the authenticity of the Los Pikes lifestyle.

Melancholic swedish Dakota Johnson takes on the sufferings of Father/Daughter relationships, meditations on melancholy and generational trauma.

Melancholic, introspective, and quietly devastating, this film feels like a continuation of the emotional terrain mapped out by Renate Reinsve in The Worst Person in the World. Once again, she inhabits a character who is difficult, elusive, and at times unlikeable, but in a way that feels deeply human rather than constructed…

Homage to Home - in conversation with @lenachalema

After a long awaited (and very much highly anticipated from our side) call, we finally had the opportunity to speak with Lenacha. Sat on the sofa in my living room with the first glimmer of spring sun beaming through my windows just before our call starts, the singer-songwriter from Cheetham Hill picks up the phone and her sweet, gentle voice encapsulated the ethereal feeling that had already began to fester.

‘I’ve always been singing’ she says - with musical foundations resting in her local church, Lenacha didn’t really discover her sound until getting her first guitar at age 13. By replicating the sounds that surrounded her, the self taught artist was able to find her own personal melody as a by-product. Despite taking a hiatus early on in her career as her focus shifted towards academia over music, she expresses how creativity has always sat deep within her. So by undertaking an undergraduate in Photography, we began the conversation about how she hears before she sees, and that music had always bled into her wider concepts and world building…

“I feel guilty when I don’t think about it” - Sorry, Baby.

Eva Victor emerges as an American Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and I don’t just mean that fuck-ass bob. In her A24 directorial debut, Victor, who also plays the main character, Agnes, offers a film that is so delightfully sad and yet so comedic and brutal. It’s comedy with a sharp knife. It’s fleabag in New England.
