Ontario businesses are navigating continued trade disruption, but pressure is not paralysis; and while certainty may not be on the table, action is.

In the latest episode of ON Focus, OCC President & CEO Daniel Tisch explores how businesses are adapting and what government can do to create the conditions for them to succeed today and sustain that success tomorrow.

Last night, OCC's Vice President of Policy, Vincent Caron, joined Radio-Canada's Le Téléjournal Ontario to discuss what Ontario businesses want to see following the election in Quebec.‌

The message from Ontario's business community is simple: cooperation matters. Ontario and Quebec account for nearly 60% of Canada's economy, and when our provincial and federal governments work together, businesses, workers and communities across the country benefit.

At a time when companies are looking to diversify markets and strengthen supply chains, reducing interprovincial trade barriers represents a significant opportunity for economic growth. by @ontariocofc

Ontario businesses continue to face trade uncertainty, economic volatility, and ongoing tariff pressures. But they're not standing still.

A new Ontario Chamber of Commerce report shows businesses are diversifying suppliers, exploring new markets, and strengthening operations to remain competitive in a changing environment.

"Trade uncertainty is creating real pressure for Ontario businesses, but pressure isn't paralysis,” said Daniel Tisch, President and CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce.

“Businesses are adapting, diversifying, and taking control of their own destinies. The Ontario Chamber study reveals a business community that is anxious about the future, but increasingly confident in its ability to navigate it," he added.

The path forward is clear: building a stronger economy starts with creating the conditions for businesses to succeed.

AI is reshaping education, skills development and labour market needs. The Workforce Development Policy Council recently convened to discuss what it will take to ensure Ontario’s workforce remains competitive in a rapidly changing economy.

Convened in partnership with the Council of Ontario Universities (COU), the discussion featured presentations from Skills for Change's Sampada Kukade and COU's Steve Orsini, who explored the opportunities and challenges AI presents.

Key themes included:

✅ Building AI readiness means more than learning new tools. Capabilities such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and data literacy will become even more important as AI adoption accelerates

✅ Collaboration between employers, postsecondary institutions, and workforce organizations is key to aligning training with skills demands and prepare learners for AI-enabled workplaces

✅ A coordinated approach to AI literacy, workforce transition, and skills development can help address adoption gaps, support SMEs, and ensure workers and communities are not left behind

Thank you to council members for an engaging discussion on how Ontario can harness the benefits of AI while strengthening the human skills, adaptability, and talent that will drive long-term economic growth and competitiveness.

“We’ve got to focus on very careful and strategic retaliation in consultation with business, but also on supporting businesses that are affected by the tariffs, working with our allies in the U.S. business community—and we have many who agree with us, they want fewer barriers to trade, not more—and finally redoubling efforts to build our own economy.”

Canada cannot afford to retreat from the trade negotiation table with the U.S. — but we also can’t reward unfair tactics with unilateral concessions.

In this episode of ON Focus, OCC President & CEO Daniel Tisch reflects on the Gordie Howe International Bridge as a powerful symbol of partnership, resilience, and the rules-based trade system Canada must defend.

As tariff threats continue to create uncertainty for workers, businesses, and communities, Canada needs to negotiate from strength: protecting our North American foundation, diversifying global trade, removing internal barriers, and staying united.

That is how Canada fights back — with discipline, unity, and confidence in our future. by @ontariocofc

Great conversation with the @ontariocofc about what it will take to build a stronger, more competitive #Ontario economy.

Small businesses need a government that understands the realities they face and is willing to take a pragmatic, evidence-based approach to removing barriers and creating opportunities.

Ontario has enormous potential. We need to move with more urgency, support our businesses, invest in our communities, and make it easier for people to build, work, and invest here. by @ontariocofc

“There should be no unilateral concessions and there should be no concessions without broad relief of these sectoral tariffs that have hurt our businesses and workers and communities. And it’s important to say that it has also hurt American businesses and workers and communities as well, because they’re the ones who are actually paying the tariffs.”

OCC President & CEO Daniel Tisch, joined CBC Metro Morning with Jill Dempsey today to discuss ongoing Canada-U.S. trade negotiations and the importance of pursuing an agreement that provides meaningful relief for Ontario.

As businesses continue to navigate uncertainty, the OCC will keep advocating for policies that support growth, protect jobs, and build a stronger, more resilient economy. by @ontariocofc
