It’s hard to overestimate the influence Gloria Steinem has had on my life. I was just starting high school when the modern women’s movement was taking hold. Fortunately, I had a mother (and father) who championed the ideals of the movement in our home, so my four sisters and my brother and I were steeped in feminism from very early on in life. I went on to become involved in feminist causes first as a high school and college student, then as an election door knocker, as a mother of boys, as a member of the board of directors of a women’s health care clinic, and a high school teacher for 25 years, teaching students about equality and women’s rights (among many other things) through the non-fiction and fiction text we read and analyzed. Through it all, Gloria Steinem was a pillar of the movement, consistently responding to irrational and overblown fears that the women’s movement sought to sow hatred of men, with intelligence, reason and equanimity, always highlighting the ways in which suppressing women’s rights is solely about controlling women. To say she has been a role model does not begin to express my admiration of and gratitude to Gloria Steinem. Every woman in this country is better off because of her. If you don’t think so, you are mistaken. by @onthetablesd
