Wishing for Silence - Lindsay Crook

Our main character here is having health issues and fighting for help from the health care system but no one is taking her seriously. Hmm sounds familiar. Her husband snores every night and is not helping the struggle. Who hasn't gone a little crazy from lack of sleep.

This short read does a great job at making you feel for Corri. Girl just wants some pain free peace & quiet!

Starving for perfection

You know those minimalist lifestyle influencers? This main character brings that to the next level. Super organized, clean and de-cluttered but something is still missing, so she ramps it up. She has found a new way to become not only zen in a living space but also with ourselves through getting rid of what we don't need.

This quick read raises the question what does it mean to be a woman and mother in the world today and the expectations it comes with. Is perfection really perfect? Do you ever feel like you belong? How little space can you take up?

I felt like I knew where this was going and it isn't my first book in this genre, so it wasn't completely disturbing as some people may find it. I will say as the ending creeped up it did make me feel extra icky. Check your trigger warnings.

Might drop in followers here but I cannot believe we are still fighting this crap. If they want more babies, why don't they look at the mess they have created first before questioning why the majority of us are not having children. They are basically saying get with the program. Sigh.. Pick up a book and leave our bodies alone.

Blob - Maggie Su

This is not a typical love story. It's more about the awkward journey of figuring out who you are and the reality that you cannot control the people around you.

There is a part where the main character shares she wishes for some kind of affirmation that she mattered to people and would disappear sometimes starting when she was young to see if anyone cared. She wants people to feel as deeply as she does and is frustrated about the unfairness of the rock stuck in her stomach pit she carries around.

She mentions how alcohol gave her the ability to shut off her inner monologue long enough to speak, make jokes and win a round of darts. It made her into something more than the extra in the background. I felt this in my core, and back then at the time thought it was a superpower too. Now I question the drinking culture, and why do we ask people why they aren't drinking instead of the other way around? In a perfect world everyone would feel comfortable to be themselves and have a good time.

I loved this weird little book. The Seinfeld references made me so happy. I teared up while reading about her leaving before she could be rejected, self sabotaging, and isolating to avoid getting hurt. I just wanted to hug this little weirdo and I know a lot of us have felt this way at some point.

" I had trouble growing up.. I need to finish the sentence, but I have nothing, no traumatic backstory to explain why I am the way I am. The sentence is already complete: I had trouble growing up. But I know I need to offer her something. Taiwanese I say "

I don't know why the world feels extra hard for some of us. Why we feel the good and bad parts so intensely. In the end we are just figuring it out and need a community that understands.

Off to try and relax now. Think of simple things. A meadow, a good book and my favorite episode of Seinfeld ...

This, My Best Friend's Exorcism is one of the books I love the look of and for some reason kept putting it off for a few years. (I do love the paperback cover too!) When it came to screen I watched the movie and LOVED it. Finally have my claws on these pages and have been enjoying it this week!

What was your best read or highlight of this month??

August went quick and even tho I was so exhausted somedays it was so much fun. Read quite a bit! No 5 stars but the variety of genres here was never boring. Connected with some new to me awesome authors and read some upcoming releases.

My amazing friend came over for a hair day and I got some new glasses. Went out for birthday celebrations and a bridal party so the vibes were good. Finally sunk my claws in a horror bookstore that has been on my radar forever. Some days wrote a lot and am proud where my debut novel is going, yes I will be asking for ARC readers eventually because why not! 💜📚
