BeChinatown Night Market + Mahjong on Waverly in July. Gratitude and joy to see all these people coming into Chinatown.

Aunt Lily had a vision to help small businesses. We did her so-called budget on a piece of printer paper, not knowing what we were doing. So many naysayers and haters. Now in its third year, the vendors and AMAZING volunteers have made BeChinatown Night Market the #1 night market in the nation two years in a row, according to USA TODAY. It’s always chaotic, never easy, but this is Chinatown.

AND, what a magical scene on Waverly with 30 PACKED Mahjong tables. Tables were full within 20 minutes and stayed full all night. Bystanders - locals and tourists - stood and watched, as tiles clacked and clacked. Thank you @heycynthiahuie @onwaverly @mopaimahjong @mrmahjongs + ALL the volunteers for making this open air mahjong night such a success.

We’ll run it back again Friday, August 14!! ✌️

People kept asking about the talented band — they’re all SF high schoolers who love playing music together. 🫶

Thank you to the Triotones By The Bay and William Choi opening on the yangqin for the music this past Friday 🎶 Another Mahjong on Waverly in the books. This one really highlighted how intergenerational this event is — it’s incredible seeing young people spending time in Chinatown and making it their own place. Love that they went out to grab dinner together afterward. Excited to have them back.

Thank you @dr.han.ren and @hellamentalhealth for the conversation around The Multi Hyphenated Life. There’s something super cool about a room where you can bring every part of yourself, the whole hyphenated, in between, still becoming self, and feel safe doing it.

In the conversation, I was reminded what a special community we’ve built, one that makes room for nuance and complexity.

We will have ~30 mahjong tables set up and ready for play this Friday 7/10 at the Chinatown Night Market along historic Waverly Place. Once again, we are collabing with @onwaverly @bechinatownsf @mrmahjongs @dyannaluna and Rotary Club of San Francisco Chinatown to host an evening of Hong Kong 🇭🇰 and Filipino 🇵🇭 style mahjong. Volunteer instructors will be available to teach and coach! Hope to see you MJers there ✌🏻!

Last Friday was full of good people, unexpected connections, and moments we didn’t plan for but couldn’t have asked for better. We had no idea who would cross our path, and it turned out to be exactly the right people.
One of those moments: getting to spend time with my friend Quanuquanei “Q” Karmue and his family. Q is the author of Witness — his powerful retelling of the Liberian Civil War through the eyes of the child he once was. It’s raw, it’s honest, and it’s the kind of book that stays with you long after the last page.
We are so happy to be carrying this book at On Waverly. Signed copies are here and ready for you to take home — this one is a life changer.

Because I’ve been getting so many queries about when the next mahjong night is, let’s go! Come shuffle some tiles and play under the lanterns on 7/10 at the next Chinatown Night Market.

We are looking for volunteer HK style 🇭🇰🀄️ instructors and helpers to set up and tear down. DM me for more info if you’re interested in pitching in for the love of mahjong!
