Oprah Winfrey once said after she had built her university that it was her greatest legacy, but the reply from her mentor changed everything.
Her mentor was Maya Angelou, and her reply to her was "a legacy is the many lives you have touched."
I think of the kid who became an A plus student, because a teacher told him you are not an "olodo". The girl who was told by a random stranger, you are not useless, you were meant to shine. Your mistake didn't make your identity, it never will.
Or the classmate who saw the gift you didn't see in yourself. The fact that it created a moment, now you want to help people find theirs is a legacy.
I see legacy as a selfless service to mankind for good.
A legacy was meant to help people shine too, to draw people from darkness. A devotion to change and transform.
The lives who point their transformation to you have shown you, your legacy.

A regret worth having is the kind that makes you better, makes you wiser and changes you for better.
It is the kind you think of, but the pain is missing, instead you're full of gratitude for the outcome.
I consider the fact that it may have been intentional, and the lesson learned inspirational. They are the mistakes you think back to, and then you say gladly "it led me to this."
On the other hand, it is the regret that makes you realize how foolish you may have been.
You begin to see how messed up your life has been, then you say to yourself the truth you had ignore. Now that's the kind of regret worth having.

Jonathan had been confused all his life, he never knew what to choose and when he did, he changed his mind afterwards.
He wanted to be an architect, then later he wanted to be a pilot, realizing he didn't want it anymore chose accounting.
He was in a dilemma because his father had had it with him, and always tried to show how much he was exhausted with him.
Jonathan himself was exhausted, he couldn't explain why he couldn't stick to anything for long. He always had this feeling, that he wasn't doing what he wanted to, therefore his reason for changing line of profession.
He was losing hope fast too, if he couldn't stick to something he'd pick anything and stay he decided.
Fate seemed to be working in his favor, for he realized shortly after he had participated in an art exhibition, he was the very thing he was searching for.
Jonathan had realized shortly that he could effortlessly draw and paint beautifully, which was noticed by all making him a wanted designer.
Apparently, he had stopped drawing, because his father saw no future in it. But now he realized, he had found purpose, in the very thing he abandoned.
His hope had risen again and this time, his father had no objections, having realized it had brought him financial stability.

Growing up as a kid, I never liked my feet, because I had been told by someone who was close to me, that they looked like a big boat and I believed it. It was so bad at times they made it feel terrible on me.
But it changed while I was in tertiary due to an encounter I had.
It was a morning class, and I stood outside since there was no teacher, and had no desire to be part of the noise.
A lady stood not too far away from me, as she too waited. I don't recall what drew me to her feet, but I got amazed at the size, and the fact that she painted them green.
My mind ran to all the times I had been told how crooked and large my feet were, and believed it. But looking at this lady's feet I disagreed. I stared at mine and looked at hers repeatedly and instantly the perception I had carried for years about my feet changed that day.
I learnt that day that people will say things, but you needed to see for yourself, and not through their lenses as I had done for years. It made me realize some things were exaggerated and not true.
It happened again with a dress I was given which I loved, but when someone saw it on me she commented with a face "this old looking dress!" I remember looking it over and over and not being able to see what she saw.
I had held on to the dress and fixed it to my size. Get this, everyone else loved it on me and I remember thinking, they don't see it looking old. Funny thing is this same person saw the dress, later and commented it for it's beauty and in my head I was like Really!
Moral lesson, people will always have various opinions about one particular thing. You need to realize that how you see and think of something related to yourself counts more even if they may be right.
Had I not personally had an encounter with that lady, maybe if still live insecure about my feet and never would have learned to live outside people's perception of how they saw me.
This belief also I carried into every other part of my life and I live with much peace now.

Adaku had lost her father at the age of nine, and her mother had taken up the responsibility of both parents.
While she saw most kids who had both parents grow up to become tyrants, her mother had groomed her and her three siblings to become responsible.
As the sole provider, she never complained, only worked diligently and prayed continuously.
Most nights, she woke up to hear her mother praying into the night and would go to sleep peacefully knowing she was covered.
They had faced seasons but her mother always encouraged them to trust God, and the season would pass.
There were times when it got tougher, but her mother never relented.
Then came the time when a man would come around the house, trying to get close but Adaku noticed her mother never showed interest and the man never came back.
She had wondered why, though these men knew her mother had children, they still wanted her.
Apparently her virtue had been noticed. Adaku and her siblings always had their needs met and learned to be grateful even when they didn't.
Though Adaku wondered why they never had the freedom other kids like them had, now she understood why and was grateful.
While others played, they studied and had skill lessons. The only place for total freedom was at church with the other kids.
Their mother had instilled in them the belief in God, and how to run to him always just like she did.
Adaku now mature, realized her mother had been intentional about them all, even if she worked twice as hard to provide for them.
Indeed they had all grown up, and the values instilled in them had blessed their lives. Most widows wallowed in self pity or sold themselves but not her mother.
She now had a home of her own, and she came to realize, she had the strongest mother ever.

She stared at herself hating what she saw. The freckles were too dark, they weren't pretty like Diane's. She has heard people whisper about it, Diane's were preferred hers were "ugly".
She tried to hide them with makeup but everyone saw the freckles, even when they were covered.
She sighed before grabbing her bag, it was time for school and she needed to go.
As she walked out the dorm, she decided to take the left path on the sidewalk. She had not walked more than five steps when she stood awestruck.
She watched her as she strutted across the side walk, she was gorgeous. She watched this lady move with the aura of grace and poise, there was no insecurity in her eyes.
When she got closer, a smile played on her lips as she said "I love your dark freckles, they are unique."
She was now dumbstruck, did this gorgeous lady just say what she heard? She tried to reply, the lady seemed to notice and stopped, "you look beautiful with these freckles, I've never seen this type before." I'm Ashley", she finally managed to say.
Divine's the name beautiful. I really love your freckles, I wish I had them on my albino skin.
Ashley couldn't believe what she just said, apart from seeing an albino who was proud of it and looked beautiful in it, she never thought she'd hear those words.
"Darling, don't hide this rare gift that makes you unique and dynamic" she said. "Hope I see you again" and she walked away.
Ashley watched her go, her words moving in her mind. She walked slowly thinking on what she just heard, her freckles made her dynamic and unique. She had hidden what made her stand out from the rest. She realized it and instantly she was reborn in that moment.
She skipped in excitement like a little girl promised a dress for her birthday. She thought of herself again and now light shone not darkness anymore. Her freckles were part of her and needed to be loved not hated.
Thanks to her encounter from taking a different lane to school, it felt like a divine orchestration that looked like an accident. Surely God wanted to make her see the beauty he had made her to be.

The truth will set you free they say, but theirs didn't rather it held them to ransom.
They knew he was wrong, knew he crossed the line yet they failed to correct him. Apparently he was male so he was "free" to do as he wanted.
Came home late, left when he wanted, they never knew his friends, but it was clear from the way he spoke. "A man who sleeps with many women is mature, but a woman who sleeps around is doomed." Those were one of his philosophies.
"I want a woman I can dominate, and a woman who wants respect will never have a good marriage."
His beliefs certainly called for deliverance and yet, at 28 years of age still living under his parents roof, felt he deserved it. He was a man after all, they didn't want to budge him.
They knew he was wrong to smoke, live like he had all the money yet never supported, but he was a man.
Their silence was not just annoying, it was irritating as well. But they massaged his false ego, and now they were paying for it.
They left tough love and assumed the good parent, now their lives were on the line in the surgery theater.
He had gone on a rampage after being told to never yell at anyone. He felt he deserved to be treated better and went on a killing spree. Stabbing both parents before looking for anyone else, had passed out after not finding anyone.
He could have been stopped long ago, but they held the truth for the assumption of maturity. Now they were in pain, and couldn't help themselves as they failed had to help him.

I took the route that led to the nearest bus stop. I waited just a few minutes and the bus arrived.
This was my daily commute, I never failed to come here since I had a job. I got in the mini bus and we moved.
Shortly after, an old man joined me in the bus sitting next to me. I greeted him and he smiled as he responded. Our journey continued but shortly after, I realized he was trying to get my attention. "My daughter you dey school?" He asked. "No Sir I'm done, I'm currently working."
"Ah! You try my pikin, see as you dey work for yourself, e good o! You no do like other girls wey dey folo man for monee." I chuckled at the way he pronounced money like a typical Igbo man.
"There are many like me Sir, girls are getting very wise now" I tried to tell him my opinion on the matter. "No be lie my pikin, I like am o, e better make you hustle you own dan make man colombi you finish come troway."
"But it's not easy Sir" I honestly admitted, "Na so e be o, but one day e go change my pikin, God dey always support person wey dey do e own part well." "One day you go look back see say road don far for wer you been start and you no go regret am."
I reasoned with what he said, acknowledging his meaning of humble beginnings. I looked through the window observing the riding sun and smiled. One of my many moments of pure serenity. I wasn't there yet but I wasn't going to miss out on the moments now.
Soon I was to alight from the bus, I remember his words as I stepped down "my pikin e no go tay now, God go do am for you." I responded with a heartfelt "Amen".
As I sit across from the bus stop, I'm in tears, his prayer for me had done something in me.
I wasn't taking a bus anymore, I was now a thousand times more. And my little moments of serenity, are full of gratitude and beautiful memories. "I wish every girl and lady didn't have to live with any regrets" I whispered.
I thought of the old man and smiled too, his smile was beautiful I realized. I said a grateful prayer for crossing paths with him as I drove home.

I see it now Irene, I understand you better.
I realize now you weren't a problem, neither a burden. You just wanted to be involved in love.
You asked because you cared, you didn't intrude you were concerned.
I should have understood tough love, when you told me gently where I was wrong but I only cared about my opinion.
The truth is my mind was too young, yet I was older. I've done a lot of growing up, and I'm not fully there yet but I'm not where I used to be.
I say this to say I've changed, i understand what it means now just like you understood in our relationship.
And now I realize two need to work to make it stand. Not just you alone, but me as well.
These are the words I want to say, but now I see you across the lounge, and you're not alone Irene, and it breaks my heart to say this; but you're in a better place, for your laughter tells me you're at peace.
I've lost you to another Irene, my heart is beating but in pain and regret, for I know now how valuable you've been to me. Bye Irene.

Her thoughts scream but she can't spill.
It's been too long yet she never spoke, and now her dreams are beginning to get too real.
It was her fault, she should have restrained herself but she didn't. "No one should know or you'll be in trouble" she told herself.
Yet everyday, she sees him pass by, he looks at her as if taunting, "what would you do?" She always looks away, heart sinking.
Her mind reflects to that faithful day, how she had gone with him. The excitement of ice cream and shawarma clouding her senses.
He just sat and watched. She ate and then he ordered for fried chicken, then fries, she just kept going while he watched.
Soon she was done, she had enjoyed herself and it was time to go. The road led to his apartment, she felt "I'll just look and leave" how wrong she was.
It was like a flash, she was forced into the room and pinned to the couch, her hands held firmly backwards.
"Please let me go" she begged, he spoke from behind his tone giving her chills. "After all you ate?" She knew it was over, he raped her anally as well.
She was just in ss1, she had no business to be with him, but her cravings stole the place of wisdom.
This was her father's best friend. He handled her father's businesses effortlessly, she couldn't speak. He had helped her father too many times.
Even if she spoke, the blaming wouldn't stop. She had carried the secret since then, all to herself with the trauma.

Stillness in the moment,
They don't understand, they sometimes conclude according to how they feel about you.
That's why your good intentions get used as bait against you, and your point, a weapon fashioned against you.
They presume and then they act out like it's true, yet they are flat out wrong.
Your opinions in truth, make them feel judged for what they're guilty of, but they accuse you of judging.
When you said no, it hurt their lifestyle of recklessness, and now you disgust them.
Your decision to be right irritated their lifestyle of wrongs so you're the problem.
They want you to be silent, so they abuse your power and your refusal makes you a deceit religiously.
They don't know, they just assume and understanding is lacking, but the idea is to judge you as wrong.
People will be people, when selfishness is an excuse, you become an irritant so realize it.
Your growth is most times misunderstood, and your obedience is a stupid step, but that's how the world thinks.
For what is wisdom to God is foolishness to the world isn't it?
I wouldn't worry so much for my conscience is clear, and someday the truth will be revealed.
That's what I'll like to say, cause convincing anyone never did much.
