I feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to create artwork celebrating the pepeketua (Hochstetter’s frog) and the incredible biodiversity of the Waitākere Ranges.
The pepeketua (Leiopelma hochstetteri) is one of Aotearoa’s rarest taonga species, a tiny, ancient amphibian hiding out in the cool, damp undergrowth of native forests. Unlike most frogs, it doesn’t croak, has no eardrums, and barely hops. Instead, it communicates through soft squeaks, body movements, and chemical signals.
These frogs don’t have fully developed lungs, they absorb oxygen straight through their skin! 💚 But that only works if their skin stays moist. If they dry out, they can’t breathe. That’s why shady stream banks, mossy logs, and soggy leaf litter aren’t just home - they’re essential for survival.
With only a few isolated populations remaining, the pepeketua is classed as Nationally Endangered. They’ve survived millions of years, but now face modern threats like habitat loss, predators, and climate change. Protecting them means protecting the entire ecosystem they belong to.

Over two months, I researched and created artwork inspired by this remarkable little frog, bringing its quiet presence to life through art.

Sincere thanks to @PFWRA Pest Free Waitākere Ranges Alliance and @creativenz for the opportunity to be part of this Special Species Spotlight for Te Rau o te Huia. A powerful initiative shining a light on Aotearoa’s most threatened species. 🐸 🌿

Origin is a three-dimensional exploration of connection and continuity. Using a needle and thread to pierce and weave through the surface, the work transforms simple materials into a tactile narrative of time and memory. Each stitch becomes both a mark and a bridge, binding fragments, mending spaces, and tracing unseen pathways between what was and what is. Rooted in process and materiality, Origin invites viewers to slow down, lean closer, and experience the quiet tension between fragility and resilience, creation and repair.
