Cusco, you are the ache I carry in my chest at sea level.
I left you and you didn’t even notice. You just kept being ancient. You just kept glowing gold at dusk like you had no idea what you’d done to me.
Your cold mornings. Your thin air that made everything feel like a dream I couldn’t breathe enough of. The Plaza de Armas lit up at night…I stood there and felt small in the most beautiful way, like a secret the mountains were keeping.
I want to go back. I always want to go back.
But you are not mine, Cusco. You belong to the centuries. You were here before me and you will be here when I am dust, still stunning, still indifferent, still draped in fog like you’re not even trying.
And that is the cruelest part…that a place can break your heart. That stone and altitude and light can make you homesick for somewhere that was never your home.
I loved you the way you love something you know you can’t keep.
