Last week, I visited the @powerstationatberkleenyc , the New York studio where so many of the records that shaped me were born, and got to spend time with Alex Venguer @ootermind, a multi-Grammy engineer who’s shaped sound for Sting, John Legend, Yo-Yo Ma and a list that goes on forever.

I’m still processing what it means to stand in a place like that, between the world I’m leaving and the one I’m walking into.🙏🏻

Little Boy Lost.

I recorded this beautiful Michel Legrand / Alan & Marilyn Bergman song for my Legrand Affair Deluxe Edition (produced by Rob Mathes), and revisiting it now feels especially meaningful as I prepare for my Ronnie Scott’s debut in London.

It is written as a children’s tale, but like so much of Legrand’s music, it speaks directly to adults. There is longing in it, tenderness, and the hope that even when we feel lost, someone is still calling us home.

Sometimes I think Michel and the Bergmans were quietly comforting all of us through these songs.

“I’ve been using a pair of NU100k’s for the past 5 or 6 years and they have become some of my most used microphones for all sorts of sources. I obviously love them on vocals - particularly on sopranos or vocalists that can sound a bit harsh on other mics - but they have really become my go to’s for woodwinds, string section mics and particularly overheads where I can’t think of a mic that I like more.

Having said that I just got my pair of NU24k’s and I can’t wait to try them on overheads and see if these either beat them or become the alternate favorites for brighter overheads when I want them.

As for the NU24k, after a few weeks with them and trying them on various vocals, I can say that the online hype over them is not exaggerated at all. These truly do have a presence and (to use Martin’s word) glow that is unmatched - even made the vintage Elam 251 we love on a singer I’m doing a record with sound small in comparison.

Both the NU100k’s and NU24k’s are microphones I can’t imagine doing sessions without.”
