I was honored to receive an invitation from the Oxnard Performance Art Center (OPAC) Nonprofit Corp. and The Collection’s management to attend the unveiling of the Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) altar, or ofrenda, at The Collection. Organized by OPAC, the altar reflects a commitment to creating culturally centered artistic spaces.

I am sincerely grateful to The Collection’s management and staff, as well as OPAC, for bringing this altar to a vibrant shopping and entertainment destination. It offers an opportunity to bring traditional memorial practices beyond private homes and into a shared community space.

This beautiful public altar introduces shoppers, non-Mexican communities, and younger generations to the rich symbols, colors, and meaning of Día de los Muertos—a tradition distinct from Halloween. The altar also fosters belonging, cross-cultural appreciation, and collective healing by transforming a commercial hub into a place for shared remembrance.

Thank you once again to The Collection and OPAC for this thoughtful display and collaboration. by @opacnonprofit
