🌊 A L L E M A N D E 🌊

Two weeks before playing all six Bach Suites in a single concert for the first time in June at @lesdouvesonzain , I went to Brittany for a warm-up weekend. Somewhere in between concerts, looking out over that vast coastline, @theodelianne_image and I made a film of the Allemande from the 6th Suite.

There is something about this movement that has always felt unlike any of the other Allemandes to me. The very last, and the only truly slow one, it explores the space it finds itself in with grace and poise. It speaks to a certain solitude without loneliness. Perhaps that was why filming it against that huge horizon made sense to us. It is perhaps one of the least Instagrammable movements in the Suites, impossible to clip into a 30 second reel, but somehow that makes me love it even more ;)

And playing it on the little five-string piccolo cello I am lucky to call my own has become one of the great delights of my journey through these works.

Bach was one of the first things I turned towards when I left quartet life three years ago, beginning with a shared cycle of the Suites with Gary Hoffman. A month or so ago, for the first time in my life, I sat down at the beginning of the First Suite for something I never imagined I would do, and some two and a half hours of music later, (which was in reality more like four hours due to rain calling off play several times…!), I arrived at the end of the Sixth. The feeling when beginning the very last Gigue was quite unlike anything I have ever experienced… 💫

And afterwards, rather unexpectedly, I had the feeling that it wasn’t the end of something, but the beginning.

So it seems that this next season will be largely shaped by these six extraordinary pieces: going back into them now that I’ve crossed the whole landscape, picking them apart again, changing my mind, following paths I haven’t yet noticed.

There are concerts ahead, and a few other things quietly taking shape which I’m looking forward to sharing in time.

For now though, I rather like not knowing where any of it will lead… ✨

S C H U B E R T

One always has a certain feeling of trepidation when faced with bringing to life such a vast canvas as a late Schubert work. In my life as a quartet player, moments spent with his majestic G major string quartet and the two cello quintet were amongst the most challenging and rewarding of all. So when my friends from @triozenon suggested we add his epic E flat trio to our growing repertoire, I jumped at the chance. Opening the first page of this kind of 45-or-so minute journey always feels like a special sort of excitement, mixed in with a good dose of healthy anxiety, which if you’re lucky turns into some useful adrenaline ⚡️

A few days ago, in the incredible setting of the Musée du Piano in Limoux, we played it through for the first time together in concert, and my first time ever :)

It seems Shakespeare had a point… ✨

And to top it all, it was my birthday 🎂

Here’s a (blurred) bit of the 4th movement of the Schubert, deftly filmed by my dear dad who made the trip to come and hear us, and some of our Mendelssohn D minor encore for good Measure (for Measure).
