I spent 6 weeks analysing and decontextualising Laurie Anderson’s ‘O Superman’

For my module, Visual Practices, I was randomly assigned an audio and given the task to enhance, interpret, and re-contextualise the audio in the form of an artefact.

I created a tank out of aluminium wire using sculpting and wire wrapping techniques. I created a fabric patchwork to layer on top of this to interpret Anderson’s critique on US military reliance during an era of techno-humiliation.

I embodied Anderson’s way of thinking as a multimedia performance artist and intended to make every aspect of my artefact intentional. My installation artefact can be interpreted in a contemporary perspective, a direct response to ‘O Superman’, a modern perspective as a critique on AI, and a personal perspective, an homage to my mother.

The entire wireframe was made by hand with minimal assistance from the use of pliers as a full rejection of technology to further ridicule the empty promises made by the government. This can be reinterpreted through the rise of AI. A promised tool to streamline workflow and making scientific breakthroughs but over time been made more accessible. It’s weaponised to create pornography of anyone who appears on the internet including children. Its reliance by citizens has caused a decline in intelligence and regressed literacy. The deterioration of thought and growth of malice with no means of regulation.

The patchwork is inspired by the patterns of clothes my mother wore during my childhood. The wire wrapping, hand sewing, and buttons from from my childhood button collection were all influenced by skills my mother taught me as a child. This tank is no longer just a tank but a manmade replica of my mother, the same way the government paints a manmade machine for destruction as a the same figure than comforts, nurtures, and loves us.

Military technology is not a separate entity that protects us like a mother. There is futility to war and conflict and once we are consumed by propaganda we become intertwined with it.

Process for my ‘baby powder’ art and trying out this new multiple captions feature

This project was part of a series of tasks we were assigned as part of a ‘Visual Thinking’ module - focusing on translating messages, feelings, experiences into visual forms.

This task asked us to choose a strong memory of our own and translate it into a still image in a way where viewers can begin to feel what we did in that moment.

I chose my first time going to @nitecawr rave last June. It was a spontaneous and last minute decision of mine as I was conflicted between 2 events on the same night and I generally don’t enjoy making last minute decisions. This ended up being one of the most memorable nights of my life as I was surrounded by my friends, made new friends who I’m still in contact with to this day, ended up backstage, reuniting with old friends who I never thought I’d bump into here and much more. One of the DJs had played multiple back to back @s3rlofficial tracks and I’m a very big S3RL fan. I think I grew up hearing some of his songs but it wasn’t until May/June 2023 where I realised I absolutely love his music and actually went out my way to listen to it. One of the songs that really got me into him was ‘Cherry Pop’ which is about going to your first rave and having happy hardcore ‘pop your cherry’ and falling in love with the music. I never thought I’d hear this song being played at an event but Nitecawr proved me wrong and being on stage dancing to it and even though it wasn’t being played by S3RL himself, it felt like a full circle moment and I felt an intense wave of euphoria to the point I started tearing up.

I wanted to convey this euphoria and my love for the scene by using this image of me and my friends in the ballpit that was at the event, I remember being so happy in that moment I took a photo so I would remember that night forever. This actually ended up being my favourite photo I’ve ever taken and it depicted a sense of community and love (maybe some would say a sense of PLUR?!??).

i spent a whole year complaining to staff so they gave me an award

unironically i think this was my first award since star of the week in year 5. thank so much to my lovely cohort for nominating me i was fighting tears reading your nominations and i look forward to another year being course rep :P
