Celebrating the incredible play happening in OPAL schools across the West Midlands. We want every child to have an amazing lunchtime, everyday! 🌳

What did you do at school today??

Before Opal - "...can't remember.... "

After Opal- "I rolled in a tyre down the hill, built a rocket ship with my friends, hunted for bugs in the bushes, chased bubbles, draw a chalk portrait on the playground, dangled from a tree, made mud pancakes, dug to the centre of the Earth. I can't wait to go back tomorrow!!"

Improved behaviour, better attendance, less first aid, and happy, engaged, children that thrive- if these sounds like things that you want at your school, go to

We can't wait to start your Opal journey with you! by @opalwestmids

How many things can you attach to a tree for play? (Not counting the child!)

A slope offers great play opportunities to children. Traditionally in schools they're out of bounds, too muddy or too steep or just not the done thing. This school have created a brilliant play spot, with the simple additions of waterproofs, wellies, tarpaulins and playwork.

Winning all round!

Hanging out with a pal, watching the world go by.
Great for developing core strength, or catching up on gossip, or hiding, or waiting for the enemy. Or all of these things, all at the same time.

You can't beat spending your Monday lunchtime in a giant spinning top.

Outdoor play doesn't have to be big or noisy or messy. Sometimes it's sitting on a beanbag on a rug on a pallet and chilling out with a book. A cosy lunchtime with Supertato is a great way to relax.

How many artists do you think contributed to this artwork? Definitely a few I reckon, and I'm sure there was laughter, chat and probably some good concentration going on at the same time.

Paint, water, paper, cotton buds, containers- simple, effective loose parts which invite creativity.

5 years ago, I joined the OPAL team and started supporting schools in the West Midlands to improve their playtimes. Now, alongside the wonderful Amy and Ruth, we are supporting around 160 schools- roughly 64,000 children to embrace child led, adventurous play every day! So proud of our @opalwestmids team! Happier children, happier staff and happier schools. 🤸‍♀️ 🤸‍♂️ #opalschools by @opalwestmids

Adults job: make a space, provide some mats, value the play

Childs job: whatever they want! But in this case, some pretty cool handstands.

This fort has the highest level of security. The builders made it clear that rogue intruders would be lasered (swipe to see the ready made laser machine by the doorway).

Don't say I didn't warn you!!

Collaboration, negotiation, problem solving and creativity in action. And lasers, always lasers! by @opalwestmids
