LONG POST & SAD NEWS

We are sad to say that at the end of August, we will no longer be able to serve you a coffee when you visit OPEN. There are a lot of rumours around - so please read on for the whole story.

Ultimately, our 'business' is building exceptional surfboards. We never saw the front of the factory as a cafe; on average, we only serve 30 coffees a day. However, it's still an element of OPEN that we value. Through the simple act of serving coffee, we've been able to welcome people that might not ordinarily visit a surfboard factory. Over the last five years, we've met many amazing people, made the most wonderful friends and built a community that feels like home.

Everything we do is with the best intentions. No one is profiteering from OPEN (any profit would be nice 😂🤣😭🤣). We're proud to have been able to host incredible events, support local artists, and provide year-round jobs at the real living wage in an area that needs more year-round businesses.

Despite previously being comfortable with what we were doing, and for reasons outside of their control, Cornwall Council now have to hold us to the letter of our lease. As part of this situation, we have to say goodbye to our good friend Aaron (Fades & Waves), who has been our resident barber in the spray bay here at OPEN since the end of the lockdowns. Aaron has been an incredible addition to our space, a friendly face with infectious enthusiasm. We've become firm friends and regularly daydream about our plans to prop up the bar at OPEN long into retirement. The good news is that Aaron will still be providing trims somewhere locally - so watch this space for updates :)

Needless to say, we are heartbroken. We have to say goodbye to good friends and exceptional team members, and we're not yet sure what this news will mean for the future of OPEN.

It's a shit situation, but we want to stress that we want to take things forward in a positive way. It's easy at times like this to look for people to blame. Especially easy-targets like our landlord. But unfortunately, in this situation, their hands were tied.

A bit of Monday inspiration.

Meet Andrew Forest - friend of the factory and one of the most stoked surfers we know.

At 73 years young, Andrew surfs pretty much everyday. In fact, it’s quite irritating having Andrew turn up in the shop with a post surf story every time we can’t get in 😂

Jokes aside - lots of people say they’re too old to surf or too old to learn. Andrew didn’t start until he was in his 40’s. So quit making excuses - take this as a sign to get in the water - you won’t regret it 🤙

The next installment of our podcast, Hell or High Water is available.

We caught up with @beauyoung__ surfer, shaper, musician and 2x world long-board champion.

We spoke about all the things you’d expect from a conversation with a surfing world champ - the fire for competition, the purity of surfing itself, the art of hand shaping and an ever-evolving love affair with the sea.

Listen now 🎧 via the link in bio.

In a world of hyperbole, it's easy to gravitate to people who shout the loudest. Beau Young bucks that trend. Modest and understated, he is a true gentleman with a deep passion for surfing and its history. Onshore or offshore. 2ft or 10ft. He's in the water more than the frothiest of groms.

We're proud to host Beau when he visits the UK. After a few trips, he's become more than a visitor. He's a big part of the team here at OPEN, and it is epic to see a growing community of surfers stoked on his boards.

Sadly, Beau is heading home in a few weeks. We've got eight spots left for custom boards before he goes. So if you want one - grab it while you can.

Meet our head of production, Ollie Cooper.

A long time ago, before the clutter and noise created by our insane pace of life. Before, we traded quality for speed and convenience. Before, corporations harnessed machines and low-cost labour to pop out surfboards in their thousands. Surfers knew the people who built their boards.

Unfortunately for many, that connection has been lost. A board may carry a shapers brand. But middlemen, ghost shaping and even stencilled shaper signatures mean that your board may never have passed through their hands.

Shaping the board is only the start. You're even less likely to hear about the other people who bring your board to life. The laminator who glasses your board ensures the colour, weight, and strength are correct. The sander who translates the shapers vision for rails and channels into the final product.

We want to introduce you to the people behind the scenes, a dedicated handful of people who devote themselves tirelessly to creating surfboards of the highest quality.

So first up, Ollie Cooper, who heads up all of our production at OPEN.

Ollie cut his teeth at the LOST factory in New Zealand. Here he had a more traditional introduction to the world of building surfboards. No shortcuts; he was expected to perfect the basics and laminate 100's of clear boards before being allowed anywhere near a resin tint.

Many young shapers skip the mentorship and learning that’s come from an apprenticeship in a busy factory. After all, photoshop, Instagram and a trendy logo mean that anyone can launch a surfboard brand - right?

For a decade, Ollie has been quietly grafting. This is a testament to his lack of ego. He has a genuine passion for the craft of building surfboards and a continuing willingness to learn, which means that he's well on the way to becoming one of the best surfboard makers in the UK.

Thanks, Ollie. We're proud to have you as part of the team 🤙

We’ve definitely not posted enough surfboards recently! Here’s a lovely gloss-polished 6’0 @beauyoungsurfboards Wombat MKII we've got in stock at the moment.

Beau is joining us back at OPEN in November. He’s got 5 slots a week available to shape custom boards while he’s here. The first week has already sold out - so if you want one of his boards before Christmas get in quick :)

We’re back open tomorrow (Thursday) from 0900 and very excited to welcome you all back in person 🎉

The doors will be wide open, coffee machine on and Aaron @fadesandwaves.uk will be back in the bay for trims ✂️

Unfortunately the back of the factory has to stay closed for a few more days while Ollie finishes his isolation. Thanks to everyone who is currently waiting for their boards to be finished; your patience has made this pretty hellish situation a lot more bearable 🤙 taken in Open by @open.surf
