Following rounds of assessments of submissions for the Nyamiri-Bàsakkwacḕ anthology, we are excited to announce the top 12 writers whose works will inform the collection! This shortlist includes seven prose works, including creative nonfiction and fiction, and five poems. The editors carefully curated it from an extensive review of over 50 highly competitive submissions to offer diverse, thematically aligned perspectives on the Nyamiri-Bàsakkwacḕ experience. The goal is to show the reader that there isn’t a single story of making home in northern Nigeria away from home. For some, it comes naturally; for others, it doesn't and can even be bitter. All experiences count, and every aspect deserves to be told. Nyamiri-Bàsakkwacḕ is a collection of stories exploring the lived experiences of Nigerians born in, migrated to, or living in Northern Nigeria who are originally from other regions of the country. An @openartsng_ funded project, it aims to respond to the increasing ethno-religious tensions dominating public conversations through nuanced stories that foreground shared humanity without erasing differences. Anticipate! Congratulations to the shortlisted writers! Based on their titles, whose story are you particularly looking forward to reading? Tag the writer and let us know in the comments.🤩 #nyamuribasakkwace #anthology #northernnigeria #storytelling #poetry by @openartsng_
KADUNA DISCUSSION CIRCLE: OCTOBER EDITION 🧡 What does it mean to have an original voice in a world where we are constantly influenced by what we see, hear, and consume? This October, Kaduna Discussion Circle is happening in collaboration with Wisdom Patrick @ofuwisdom , an Open Arts Fund recipient, for an engaging conversation on “Mimicry, Influence and the Search for an Original Voice.” The session will explore how influences shape our ideas, creativity, and self-expression, and where we draw the line between inspiration and imitation. As part of the gathering, Wisdom will also be hosting a listening session giving audiences a first chance of encountering his project Northern Frequencies which revitalizes popular hausa music through hybrid sound, exploring popular musicians, their works and creating room for us to listen, reflect, and engage with them in a new way. Come ready to share your thoughts, ask questions, challenge perspectives, and connect with a community that values meaningful conversations. 📅 Friday, 30 October 2026 ⏰ 3:00 PM 📍 Open Arts Space, No. 3 Ramat Close A, Ungwan Rimi, Kaduna Save the date, invite a friend, and join us for another afternoon of ideas, creativity, and community. We look forward to seeing you there! 🧡 by @openartsng_

We're so pleased to share that @morag_caimbeul has been selected for the 'Crossing Tongues' Poetry Residency! Morag said: "I am thrilled to have been selected. There are many similarities between Hausa culture and my Hebridean heritage. What a joy to unite languages and cultures across countries and borders, encouraging oral traditions to thrive while welcoming modern expressions of art. I can’t wait to experience my first Dandali (ceilidh!)." Morag will travel to Abuja, Nigeria, for the Hausa International Book Festival (HIBAF) in December! Follow us to see what one full week at the Open Arts Space looks like; Saturday- Read a Create children’s creativity session and Silent Reading- Our Open Arts Fund 2025 recipient Namse Udosen @namselicious brought parts of the learnings of his Read-a-Create children’s festival to our space hosting creative expression session for children and adults where we explored independent play and creativity in children in practical ways. Monday- We lit up the Open Arts Space on Monday with our monthly trivia, where we battled for dominance in charades, bingo, and African literature quizzes! Cash prizes were won and hearts broken. But all is fair in Monday Trivia Friday- Open Arts Lit is a space for expression and creativity in any way and form. This Friday our Openners proved it! No performance list, no pressure, just an open space for anyone who wishes to step up, express themselves in prose, poetry, music, dance. The space came alive with critique, advice and camaraderie. It was an Open Arts Lit for the Ages! Saturday- We ended the week with our Writer in Residence Akumbu Uche, children’s author, creative writer and journalist. She facilitated a creative writing workshop; How to craft compelling characters for children’s books. Emerging or established, any author would have enjoyed the creative exercises she led us through as we explored the mind of children and how to best create for and with them. Thank you to our community members for always being their generous creative and curious selves! Welcome to a new week at Open Arts! We can’t wait to host you all again!!!! #creativity #capacitybuilding #artspaces #spacesforculture #artresidencies by @openartsng_
