In 2024, Dominica decriminalised same-sex relations in a historic court ruling that sent waves of hope across the Caribbean. But LGBTQ+ activists on the small island say the fight for equality is far from over.

Our reporter Ranel Felix went to the capital, Roseau, to find out what has changed - and the hurdles queer people still face in Dominica.

In the months before Donald Trump’s re-election in November 2024, Shane and JQ made a decision: to leave the United States, their home. They no longer felt safe in a country on the verge of electing a president who threatened to roll back LGBTQ+ rights. They wanted to live in a place where their son’s and their family’s rights did not feel at stake.

And so they moved to Germany - the same country that Shane’s family was forced to flee in 1938. They were Jewish. But that did not stop Shane’s grandfather, Fred Mayer, from joining the U.S. Army to fight against Nazism.

We met Shane, JQ and their son in Berlin, where they told us about what safety feels like for a queer family that had left Trump’s America for Germany’s capital, and their concerns about the rise of the far-right in their new home.

There’s no law explicitly banning gender-affirming care in the Philippines, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy for trans people who want to medically transition to undergo hormone replacement therapy, also known as HRT. Access to qualified healthcare providers remains limited across much of the Philippines, forcing many trans and non-binary people to seek information and medications online or through peer networks. On top of that, gender-affirming hormone therapy can only be accessed by those who can afford its costs, since trans care is not covered under the Philippines‘ universal health coverage scheme.

That’s why Ritz, a 28-year-old trans woman living in the City of Danao, in the Philippine province of Cebu, decided to go online to buy hormone therapy – despite the risks involved in the lack of trans-inclusive, affordable medical support. But it was thanks to her trans peers that she has been able to start her journey to become the woman she always wanted to be.

LGBTQ+ advocates say making gender-affirming care accessible and affordable for trans people across the Philippines would help reduce the risks of self-administration, particularly for those facing stigma and discrimination on the grounds of their gender identity.

This piece is part of our ongoing video series on access to gender-affirming care for trans and non-binary people around the world. Follow us to stay up to date on our upcoming stories on trans care from places others don’t cover.

Queer people and allies protested on Friday in more than 50 European cities against what Human Rights Watch has called „the widest crackdown on LGBTQ+ people in recent years“ in Turkey.

Last Sunday, Turkish authorities arrested dozens of LGBTQ+ activists in nationwide raids carried out to „protect children, the institution of the family, and public order.“ Police raided several queer organisations, and some of the activists arrested were woken up in the middle of the night and detained in their own homes. Authorities also blocked hundreds of websites and social media accounts linked to LGBTQ+ and HIV organisations and advocates.

After queer people and allies took to the streets later in the week in several cities across Turkey to protest the crackdown, Turkish police cracked down on the protesters and arrested more than 150 of them.

As of the most recent reporting, 162 people have been named as formal suspects in the judicial investigation, and at least 82 have been jailed pending trial.

In the past few years, anti-trans legislation in the United States has broken records annually, with hundreds of state bills targeting bathroom access, IDs, and gender-affirming care. That’s despite trans people making up only around 1% of America’s population.

But in the midst of this wave of legislative attacks on the rights of trans Americans, a small Black- and trans-led LGBTQ+ group is trying to change the lives of thousands of trans and non-binary people in the country, particularly trans youth.

Landlords refusing to rent to them, sudden evictions, inflated rent prices, being steered into under-resourced neighborhoods - these are some of the barriers LGBTQ+ advocates have documented despite the legal protections on the books. And this comes on top of the discrimination trans people already face in education and employment.

In Delhi, we met Krishanu, an LGBTQ+ activist and independent researcher who has investigated the power imbalance between landlords and trans tenants.

This is the second piece of our two-part report on the barriers trans people face in accessing housing in India. To watch the first-person story of a trans woman who has experienced this herself, go to the linked video.

Housing discrimination against trans people has technically been banned in India since 2019. But that hasn’t stopped it from being a daily reality for trans Indians looking to move homes.

From outright denial by landlords and forced evictions, to inflated rents and being pushed into under-resourced neighborhoods - LGBTQ+ advocates have documented the many ways trans people struggle to access housing equally. And that’s on top of the barriers they already face in education and employment.

In Delhi, we met a trans woman who shared her story with us.
