At Open Path Centre, we believe AI should be a thinking partner, not a shortcut. 🚀

At our Back-to-School Youth Innovation Challenge, students started with just pen and paper to think, plan, and reflect before using AI and technology. They then gained hands-on experience creating their own AI tutor and building a personalized planner using technology.

Our goal? To help youth think critically, explore new ideas, and build the confidence to use AI responsibly.

🧠 Remember: If you can’t explain it, you haven’t fully learned it!

Today, on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour the Survivors of residential schools, the children who never returned home, and the families and communities whose lives have been forever impacted by these institutions.

At The Open Path Centre, we recognize that reconciliation requires more than remembrance. It calls for continued education, active listening, meaningful accountability, and a commitment to addressing the inequities that persist today.

We encourage our community to take time to learn about the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools, listen to Indigenous voices, and reflect on the role each of us plays in advancing truth and reconciliation.

Every step toward understanding is a step toward meaningful change.

✨ What an incredible day! ✨

On Saturday, September 26th, The Open Path Centre hosted our Back to School Youth Innovation Challenge, bringing together learners from Grade 5 to Grade 12 for a day of learning, creativity, connection, and innovation.

Students learned how to create their own AI tutor while exploring safe and responsible AI use, including protecting personal information, using AI as a helper rather than a doer, strengthening their work, learning from mistakes, and using AI to practice and reinforce concepts.

They also explored time management, AI prompting, and planning, using their school timetables to create two-week plans and think strategically about balancing school, extracurricular activities, and other responsibilities.

One of our favourite parts of the day was watching students from different grades connect, learn from one another, ask questions, and share what they discovered. 💚

A huge THANK YOU to our incredible team, the parents and families who brought their children, and our amazing volunteers. This day would not have been possible without you!

We are so proud of our students and excited for what’s ahead.

🎒 Meet Vanessa, our Tech & Program Development Coordinator! 💻✨

We’re so excited to have Vanessa Kong as part of The Open Path Centre for Research & Innovation team. With a background in medical physics, Vanessa brings a unique combination of science, technology, creativity, and program development to the work we do with young people.

At our Back-to-School Youth Innovation Challenge, Vanessa will be leading an interactive session on time management, planning, and innovation. Students will take part in activities and youth innovation challenges designed to help them build their own bi-weekly schedule, think through how they use their time, and create practical strategies for balancing school, activities, goals, and everything in between.

💡 This isn’t just about making a schedule. It’s about helping young people develop the tools to organize their ideas, manage their time, and turn their goals into action.

Technology is changing fast—and students are already thinking about what that means for their future.

At Data to Power, Brendan shared how his interest in technology started when he was young and how learning about AI has made him think differently about the future of gaming, computers, and technology.

That curiosity is exactly what we want to nurture.

At our upcoming Back-to-School Youth Innovation Challenge, students will have the opportunity to explore AI and technology in a practical, responsible way.

They’ll learn how to use AI to support—not replace—their learning, understand AI and tech safety, create better schedules, manage their time, and discover ways technology can help them work smarter.

That’s exactly what we want students to walk away with.

At our last Data to Power event, Aniyah learned how to write better prompts and use AI more effectively for school, work, and other opportunities.

This September, we’re going even further.

At our Back-to-School Youth Innovation Challenge, students will learn how to use AI responsibly to:

→ Support their schoolwork
→ Build personalized learning and study plans
→ Manage their time more effectively
→ Create better schedules
→ Develop ideas and solve problems
→ Understand AI and technology safety
