We’ve changed our name! We are proudly OPEN THREADS!!!

Open Threads has been in the works for a little while now. We believe this update to our organization’s name better reflects our spirit and mission as we seek to open new avenues of economic and environmental justice throughout Cleveland.

We have long served a spectrum of people in Cleveland, from local community members needing a helping hand to immigrants from far away lands who sought support as they established a footing along the shore of Lake Erie. We believe in opening our doors to everyone.

Open Threads is now offering FREE Open Sew!

We want to foster inclusion and community, so we are now opening our space to the community three days per week, for free!

Join us to work on your craft, or just to hang out with us. Open Sew is also a great way to keep up with whatever skill you are learning in a sewing class!

Mondays 12 PM - 4 PM
Wednesdays 4 PM - 8 PM
Saturdays 10 AM - 2 PM

Another workshop on the books with @openthreadscle 🪡 another group of incredible new friends.

We stitched up the Lawrence Top from the brilliant @vivianshaochen and CHECK THEM OUT! I threw this group some serious curveballs and boy, they came out swinging.

Projector sewing? ✅
Bust darts? ✅
Bias binding?✅
Sewn on sleeves? ✅

I would take credit, but these industrious ladies did the heavy lifting.

In September, @shedprojects_ invited Open Threads into their creative space!

SHED invited Open Threads to explore Tracing Our Patterns, an exhibition highlighting quilting and textile art. Cora Rose Nimtz and her grandmother, Linda “Mimi” Dyken, are the artists featured in this exhibition. Linda is an award-winning hand quilter based in Mobile, Alabama. She makes quilts of all different sizes, with various shapes and colors, sewn entirely by hand. Her talent is undeniable, and so is her granddaughter’s. Cora built her own creative path from the foundation of her grandmother’s knowledge. Cora is a New Orleans-based textile artist specializing in free-motion embroidery, or thread painting. Many of her pieces are directly inspired by her grandmother’s quilts.

Gabrielle walked us through their art while explaining the techniques, background, and inspirations. The group loved examining Mimi’s hand-sewn quilts. The stitches were neat and small, while the design and fabric choices were very intentional. Cora’s work was also intriguing. What appeared as paint on fabric from a distance was actually individual threads building light and shadow. After the inspiring walkthrough of Tracing Our Patterns, we stayed to create our own textile crafts. We worked alongside each other knitting, hand sewing, embroidering, and more. This gave us time to sit and socialize, discussing the art in the exhibition and other creative endeavors.
