The fact that I haven't posted this clip of Diana singing her high A from heaven feels like... blasphemy. To be quite honest.

And I will post as many times as it takes for my brain to not implode from disbelief, which will probably be never.

My favorite moments when I'm watching a singer are the moments that they do something completely unexpected, that I wasn't anticipating. That's when the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and the goosebumps spread across my body.

And that's what Diana's high-A is for me (A-natural, we checked). Every. single. time.

We all start somewhere and fall in love with opera somehow, But we owe it to the art form and ourselves as artists to absorb as much information as possible about the greats

So, if you have NO IDEA where to start (as I didn't) - because if you don't know any singers...who do you search for - consider this your starter pack. The singers pictured here in order of appearance:

1. 𝗥𝗮𝗺𝗼́𝗻 𝗩𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘆 (1911-1995) - check out his Otello! 🔪
2. 𝗟𝗷𝘂𝗯𝗮 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘀𝗰𝗵 (1913-1996) - her Salomé is 👩‍🍳 💋 💋
3. 𝗧𝗶𝘁𝗼 𝗚𝗼𝗯𝗯𝗶 (1913-1984) - I've done a full history on Gobbi - an absolute legend - his Scarpia with Callas is 🔥
4. 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 (1909-2003) - a bass that stood at 6'4" 🤩 particularly known for his Wotan and his German Lied(!) - proof that you can (should be able to) sing anything even with a "big" voice
5. 𝗕𝗶𝗱𝘂 𝗦𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗼 (1902-1999) - something for the lighter soprano girlies. Bruce Duffie interviews her about her Manon, in which she reveals that she met Massenet's granddaughter who not only helped her with the tradition of the opera but introduced her to the man who created the role of Lescaut. This is what I'm saying. 🪑
Sidenote: In the 1985 interview they also talk about how everything is "too fast" and bel canto is disappearing... 𝘪𝘯 𝟣𝟫𝟪𝟧.
6. 𝗟𝗮𝘄𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗧𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁 (1896-1960) - an American baritone who was also a film actor, radio personality and only has two 'T's in his last name because the MET made a mistake when they drew up his contact. Also he sang over 600 times in leading roles at the MET. 😅
7. 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗶 (1900-1969) - pictured here in Donizetti's 𝘋𝘰𝘯 𝘗𝘢𝘴𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘦, he decided to specialize in comic roles at the advice of Arturo Toscanini. I'm currently listening to him sing alongside Lily Pons (another one to know!) in 𝘓𝘢 𝘍𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦 𝘥𝘶 𝘙𝘦́𝘨𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 🪖

I'm thinking of putting together a list of older singers that you NEED to listen to... Is that something you guys would like to see? I would include a short history as well as signature roles and where to find them. Let me know! by @opera.anna

My favorite part about Ezio's history might be that his dad named him after a friend's brother, also named Ezio, who *happened* to be an opera singer...

Makes it seem like his insistence for Ezio to become an opera singer was more 'how funny would that be' than anything else....

We looked at Ezio Pinza on the Patreon last month, and it was honestly the most interesting exploration of a singer I think I've ever had. A bass known for South Pacific, who has over 95 roles at the Metropolitan Opera, giving me goosebumps singing Monteverdi's Oblivion Soave??

I realize that a lot of people don't know that I make long-form content, actually the impetus of OperaAnna, whereas Instagram was only meant to...help it along (lol) 🫣

I want to kill the Fach system like Elmer Fudd wanted to kill the wabbit... It's my life's mission but once it's gone, we'll probably realize it had some good qualities and miss our love/hate relationship with it.

So until I think of something better, I'll just put a giant asterisk next to whatever my CV says.

I fear I might ruffle some feathers with this one (and ok, it might be the tiniest bit clickbaity 😜 so therefore read the full caption!)

But to be fair, I've talked about receiving feedback with many people, and there's an interesting pattern... the older the singer, the less useful they perceive their feedback to be.

Almost as if the person giving it is projecting unrelated ideas onto them and their singing. Sort of the opposite of noticing someone do really well what you find difficult...

That's not to say all feedback is bad, far from it. And I think when received, it *can* be very helpful. But be sure you know how to receive it. Not everyone deserves a place in your head. by @opera.anna
