A few months ago, I was packing up after a gig, I took a peek into Instagram and the first thing I see was a friend’s story without the sound and as he was scanning across this wall of Atlanta DJ names I’ve known, shared stages with, been influenced by and networked with over my last 30 years of DJing; chills flushed through my body when I see my name scan by!😳🥰 @jermainedupri and @dallasaustins had opened @atl50hiphop down at @underground_atlanta recognizing some of Atlanta’s Hip Hop culture for Hip Hop’s 50th Anniversary. I had to get my family down there to check it out for ourselves! This is a great honor and I’m deeply flattered to have been recognized!🙏🏼 At the same time, I’ve been sitting on this for awhile because, without the influences and camaraderie of an endless list of DJ homies and peers who did not make it on this wall, I wouldn’t have either! While I’m honored to have had my name on the wall down at Underground ATL inside the Atlanta 50th Hip Hop Experience; There is another place here in ATL, while my name is a fraction of the size; the expression “BIG things come in small packages” comes to mind. My name on the wall inside the “You Don’t Got Dis!?!!” exhibit is truly an unreachable honor! 💯 I started DJing in 1993 and discovered EARWAX Records on Peachtree Street and it quickly became a home away from home. Making weekly visits digging through records, collecting flyers and mixtapes, getting beat in chess, networking with inspirational legends and many who later became, linking up for monthly meetings with my crew TasteMaker DeeJays with @wreckingcrewallstars89 , DJ battles, growing steadily from a wannabe to somebody in Atlanta’s Hip Hop culture! I very much look up to the EARWAX founder Darryl “Jasz” Smith and felt very privileged to get to a level that when I walked in to the store, Jasz would “take my hand” and lead me directly to the walls, crates and selections he knew catered best to my interests.🥰🙏🏼🫡 Getting to know him, Talib Shabazz, Doc, Seth Boogie, Kool Kila, Kamal, Ron Pullman & Sherry was a pivotal stage in my DJ life and career. EARWAX Records was truly a Mecca and all my memories and experiences there are forever engrained in my heart. The third picture in this post means so much to me; Darryl “Jasz” Smith, my “Godfather of Vinyl” on my right; and Derrill “D-Hops” Hutson, one of my very best friends from college on my left. Both I have known for 30 years, both I connected with because of our passion and commitment for music and the Hip Hop culture. They both have seen me grow from a hobbyist bedroom DJ to a life supporting career. I was honored to attend the exhilarating reunion cocktail party at the exhibit catching up with peers, mentors and fellow old school supporters of EARWAX; but even more, to return a week later bringing my best friend Derrill as a “surprise”😬 for his birthday. I couldn’t go up to PA without dippin’ into Pittsburgh and hollerin’ at the homie @selecta720 👊🏼 @djfudge1 and I scooped him up and he said, “how about Japanese?🤔” uh, “YES, please!”🤤 He took us to an Izakaya called @umamipgh and mannnnnn, this spot is ON POINT!💯👌🏼😋 I had hamachi, Hotate and scorched salmon nigiri; unagi don and a bacon wrapped quail egg skewer and had to slam my brakes cause I could’ve kept eating ALL night long! I couldn’t have been more satisfied.🥰 After dinner they showed me around a lil bit more and wound up on top of Mount Washington where the view of the city is amazing!
