For many children, a cleft condition can affect so much more than their smile – it can impact eating, breathing, hearing, speaking, growing, and feeling accepted. And yet, millions of people around the world are still living beyond the reach of safe surgery and comprehensive cleft care.

That’s why Operation Smile exists. 💙

We provide free, safe surgery and comprehensive care for children and adults with cleft conditions – working with thousands of medical volunteers to bring care closer to the families who need it most. Beyond the title, beyond the role — just doing the work that matters. 💛

Another surgical day in Iringa, Tanzania, with an incredible multidisciplinary team working together to provide safe, quality surgical care for children.

As a Clinical Coordinator, my role takes me into many different spaces — and sometimes, that means stepping into theatre, getting involved and supporting the team wherever I’m needed. 🩺✨

Gerado was desperate to find care for his daughter Lia, who was born with a cleft condition in Guatemala. He made long, gruelling journeys to hospital, and never gave up hope.

Mateo’s story is heart-warming from start to finish… 💙

When Mateo was born, his family were overjoyed to welcome him into the world. They had known that he would be born with a cleft condition, and had been able to spend time preparing for the challenges that might lie ahead.

During the first two days of his life, Mateo required a feeding tube before transitioning to a bottle. Soon after, at just two weeks old, his parents registered him in the Operation Smile Peru surgical programme.

They connected with caring volunteers who provided guidance, reassurance and vital psychosocial support.

Mateo received his first surgery at just 6 months old. His mother, Tamara, said,

“Throughout Mateo’s whole process with Operation Smile, we have felt very comfortable and calm. From the first day I called to place my son in the programme, a psychologist contacted me and gave me a lot of confidence. On the day of the evaluation, Mateo only received praise and was treated with a lot of love. I was very happy with each specialist.”

Mateo’s ‘after’ photo says it all – a confident young boy with a brighter future ahead.
