🦯 WORLD WHITE CANE DAY & EQUITY DAY — OCTOBER 15

World White Cane Day, observed on October 15, recognizes the white cane as an essential mobility aid for people who are blind or have visual impairments. It also highlights their right to move around safely, independently, and with dignity.

The white cane is more than a mobility tool; it represents independence, confidence, and the right to participate fully in society.

However, people living with vision loss may still encounter barriers in education, employment, healthcare, transportation, and access to public spaces. Promoting equity means addressing these barriers and ensuring that everyone has fair opportunities to participate in society, regardless of their level of vision.

👁️ What can we do?

Promote accessibility: Support safe walkways, accessible public facilities, and inclusive digital platforms.

Offer respectful assistance: Ask before helping a person who is blind or visually impaired, and respect their response.

Encourage inclusive eye care: Advocate for early detection, appropriate eye care, and access to low-vision rehabilitation services.

Challenge discrimination: Promote equal opportunities in education, employment, healthcare, and community participation.

At the Optometry Scholars Academic Forum (OSAF), through our Public Advocacy and Strategic Planning efforts, we advocate for inclusive eye health, equitable access to care, and a society where people with vision loss can live with independence and dignity.

👁️ WORLD SIGHT DAY

Today, we join the global community in raising awareness about the importance of eye health and the need for accessible, quality eye care for everyone.

Our eyes help us learn, work, communicate, move around safely, and experience the world around us. Yet, millions of people live with vision impairment that could have been prevented or managed with timely eye care.

👁️ Uncorrected refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism can affect learning, work, and everyday activities.

👁️ Cataracts can cause cloudy or blurred vision and are a major cause of avoidable vision impairment.

👁️ Glaucoma can damage the optic nerve and may lead to permanent vision loss, often without noticeable symptoms in its early stages.

👁️ Diabetic eye disease can affect people living with diabetes and may threaten vision when not detected and managed early.

👁️ Children also need regular eye examinations, as undetected vision problems can affect their academic performance, development, and participation in daily activities.

Regular comprehensive eye examinations help detect eye conditions early, identify refractive errors, monitor eye health, and provide appropriate management or referral when necessary.

At the Optometry Scholars Academic Forum (OSAF), we advocate for greater eye health awareness, early detection, preventive care, and accessible eye care services for individuals and communities.

This World Sight Day, let us remember that eye care is an essential part of overall health. Taking care of our eyes today can help protect our vision and quality of life for years to come.

💚 Healthy eyes support healthy living.
👁️ Get your eyes checked. Protect your sight. Preserve your vision.

👴🏽👵🏽 INTERNATIONAL DAY OF OLDER PERSONS — OCTOBER 1

Today, we celebrate older persons and recognize the importance of supporting their health, independence, and quality of life.

As we age, the risk of certain eye conditions increases. Cataracts, Glaucoma, and Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) are among the conditions that can affect vision in older adults.

👁️ Cataracts can cause cloudy vision and difficulty seeing clearly.
👁️ Glaucoma can gradually damage the optic nerve and may cause permanent vision loss if left undetected and untreated.
👁️ AMD affects the macula, the part of the retina responsible for central vision, and can make activities such as reading and recognizing faces difficult.

Many age-related eye conditions can be detected early and appropriately managed through regular comprehensive eye examinations.

At the Optometry Scholars Academic Forum (OSAF), we advocate for accessible and continuous eye care for older persons, helping them maintain their vision, independence, and quality of life.

💚 Healthy ageing includes healthy vision.
👁️ Protect their sight. Preserve their independence

WORLD HEART DAY

World Heart Day raises awareness about cardiovascular health and encourages people to prevent heart and blood-vessel diseases. The eye, particularly the retina, contains many small blood vessels that can be affected by systemic cardiovascular conditions. Therefore, examining the retina can sometimes provide useful information about a person's vascular health.

What are Retinal Vascular Diseases?
Retinal vascular diseases are conditions that affect the blood vessels supplying the retina, which is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Damage or blockage of these vessels can interfere with retinal function and may cause visual impairment.

Common Retinal Vascular Diseases
Some important retinal vascular diseases include:
• Hypertensive retinopathy
• Diabetic retinopathy
• Retinal artery occlusion
• Retinal vein occlusion

Risk Factors
Important risk factors include:
• High blood pressure
• Diabetes mellitus
• High cholesterol
• Smoking
• Obesity
• Physical inactivity
• Increasing age
• Cardiovascular disease
• Poor dietary habits

Signs and Symptoms
• Blurred or reduced vision
• Sudden loss of vision
• Distorted vision
• Dark spots or areas of missing vision
• Floaters
• Difficulty seeing clearly

Prevention
The risk of retinal vascular disease can be reduced by:
• Checking and controlling blood pressure.
• Maintaining healthy blood glucose levels.
• Eating a balanced diet.
• Exercising regularly.
• Avoiding smoking.
• Maintaining a healthy body weight.
• Taking prescribed medications correctly.
• Having regular medical and comprehensive eye examinations.

Regular eye examinations, together with proper control of blood pressure, blood sugar and other cardiovascular risk factors, can help protect both heart health and vision.

*World patient safety day (Pre/Post surgical procedure)*

World Patient Safety Day is observed to promote awareness of safe healthcare practices and reduce preventable harm to patients.
In eye care, patient safety is particularly important before and after surgical procedures because mistakes or delays in treatment can result in complications, including permanent visual impairment.

 *Pre-Surgical Safety Measures*
Patients should:
• Provide accurate medical and ocular history.
• Inform the healthcare team about all medications and allergies.
• Undergo the required eye and medical examinations.
• Understand the proposed procedure and give informed consent.
• Follow instructions concerning food, medications, and preparation.
• Maintain proper personal and ocular hygiene.
• Ask questions when any instruction is unclear.
Post-Surgical Patient Safety
After eye surgery, patients should:
• Use prescribed medications and eye drops correctly.
• Avoid rubbing or pressing the operated eye.
• Keep the eye clean and protected.
• Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments.
• Avoid self-medication or using unprescribed eye preparations.

 *Warning Signs After Eye Surgery*
A patient should seek urgent professional attention if there is:
• Sudden or significant loss of vision.
• Severe or increasing eye pain.
• Increasing redness or swelling.
• Excessive discharge or bleeding.
• New flashes or numerous floaters.
• A curtain or shadow over the vision.
• Fever or other signs of infection.

*Role of the Optometrist in Patient Safety Before and After Surgical Procedures*

• *Comprehensive eye examination:* The optometrist assesses the patient's visual function and ocular health before treatment or surgery.

• *Patient education:* They explain the patient's condition, treatment options, expected outcomes, medication instructions, and precautions before and after surgery

• *Medication counselling:* They help patients understand how and when to use prescribed ocular medications and emphasize the importance of adherence.

• *Follow-up care:* They encourage patients to attend scheduled reviews and monitor their recovery.

CHILDREN’S EYE AWARENESS MONTH

August is dedicated to protecting and promoting children’s eye health. A child’s vision is critical for learning, development, and everyday activities. Many childhood eye problems can be treated successfully if detected early, but they often go unnoticed because children don’t always know how to explain what they’re seeing.

Children’s vision issues may result from various conditions, including:

- Refractive errors - Nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism
- Amblyopia - "Lazy eye"
- Strabismus - Crossed eyes or misaligned eyes
- Color vision deficiency
- Eye injuries
- Congenital eye conditions
- Other eye diseases that affect development

Recognizing the signs of vision problems in children is essential. Frequent eye rubbing, sitting too close to the TV/board, squinting, headaches, poor school performance, covering one eye, or losing place while reading should never be ignored. A comprehensive eye exam by an optometrist or ophthalmologist can help detect issues early and ensure children have the clear vision they need to learn and play.

Creating awareness about children’s eye health also means encouraging regular eye screenings, promoting eye safety, reducing screen time strain, and ensuring that every child has access to proper eye care, corrective lenses, and treatment when needed. Healthy vision sets the foundation for a child’s success in school and in life.

The Optometry Scholars Academic Forum (OSAF) remains committed to promoting public education, advocating for school eye screenings, and empowering parents and caregivers to prioritize children’s vision through awareness and early intervention.
