Growing up middle-class in Maryland, I was only vaguely aware that my Hungarian grandfather was once a baron who lost everything fleeing the Holocaust. And that’s partly because my grandfather doesn’t talk about the past, always finding an excuse to do something else.

Now, at the age of 100, that something else is jigsaw puzzles.

Seeking to bridge the silence that has defined our relationship, I journey to Hungary to photograph the castle he grew up in — and transform it into a puzzle we can assemble together.

But when I arrive, I am unprepared for how the locals receive me: “Has the baroness come to reclaim the castle?”

What begins as a quest to connect with my grandfather becomes a journey to understand how displacement shapes who we become.

The film premieres tomorrow at Full Frame at 1pm in the Carolina Theatre.

This project was an idea until @claims_conference made it a reality by awarding me the Emerging Filmmaker Grant and gave me the resources to work with an amazing team of Hungarian producers @sejtem @matchframeproductions
