“Ill-Legal Confinement” is a #SiteSpecificDance piece I choreographed this June 2026 at my first semester as an #MFA student at Saint Mary’s College. This is the 2/3 of my piece, but I wanted to create a deeply personal work about ICE detention centers, the sadness, fear, and rage I feel as a Chicano and a proud descendant of immigrant parents. Through metaphorical exploration of the building’s architecture—especially the bird’s-eye view, the restricted areas, and the bars of the stairs, I wanted to explore how different #perspectives shape the audience’s experience when seeing a loved one, a human being, or someone connected to their culture contained. I was curious about the feelings, thoughts, sensations, and somatic responses that arise as viewers hold the bars or look down through them. Overall, I wanted the work to become an experiential, psychological, and/or somatic encounter for both the viewer and me. Although the piece was choreographed, I left space for freedom and spontaneity at the end through #spokenword. I did not want to recite or rehearse a poem (which now has turned to one); but then instead, I was more interested in what comes out of me by trusting my body and embodied memory to channel ancestral knowledge and allow the moment to become something spiritually transcending!

BIG SHOUTOUT TO MY COHORT 13— #choreography class wouldn’t be the same without you all! Thank you for your constant love and support! I love you all by @orale.david_dance

I wanted to share these cool clips from ExPression7: The seventh installment in a series of improvised performance where we engaged around and beneath a sculptural surface created by Dean (@diag0nalstudio). We performed: Sunday, July 20th, 2025, 8PM at @coaxialarts.

Thank you again, Dean, for your art installations & this beautiful opportunity—it was unforgettable 🤌🏽🖤 I loved improvising/performing with these amazing artists.

“When They Come For Us” 🪶✨ will forever hold a special place in my heart. I’m beyond grateful to share that out of 45 pieces my piece was 1 of 11 selected for the ACDA Baja Region GALA Concert on February 7, 2026, at my dance home, Cal State University of Long Beach 🙏🏽

This work began as a solo during a time when I didn’t have the words to express my rage and heartbreak in response to the ICE raids. I first created it on my dear friend @lteresafloresl @movimiento.en.vidaa , where she danced her truth and helped me give those emotions a voice. It later grew into an ensemble of 14 incredible dancers, who expanded the depth of the work through their own stories.

Rooted in our immigrant/descendant experiences, the piece explores fear, resilience, and the strength within our raza community. Through gesture, floorwork, and shifting formations, dancers move through moments of resistance, protection, and care—holding space for one another as individual voices emerge.

At its core, this piece is about collective survival—how we support and stand beside each other through uncertainty. It honors the quiet fears, unspoken prayers, and the strength that continues to move through us cuando estamos unidos! Seeing these dancers bring this work to life was powerful, healing, and everything I hoped it would become.

Thank you @rhc_danceprogram for welcoming me back as a guest artist—it’s always an honor to return to my FIRST dance home 🥹 Thank you to each one of my dancers, to @kristinakurteaga for your support during this process, and to @alejandrowrites for your powerful and inspiring poetry.
“And WE will be anything but quiet!” ✊🏽🇲🇽❣️

Now more than ever, we need each other soooo much! To show up for each other, to hold each other, to really see one another! *sighs* CO|LAB 2026 was truly an unforgettable, life-changing dance experience. This time shared with such an incredible group of human beings/dance artists will forever live in my core memories, my heart, and my body.

Even though I truly didn’t want it to end… dance is the only art form you can’t tangibly keep—you can only experience it in the moment. Yet it teaches us the power of surrender, of transcendence, of allowing ourselves to be evolved in ways we can’t imagine. It asks us to stay present and aware within our community, within the moment, and to honor the rawness of letting go.

Deep gratitude to CO|LAB 2026, Rebecca Lemme, Kevin Williamson, and each powerful artist I’m grateful to call a friend—thank you all for your whole selves and for this beautiful, transformative 6 day process (we literally made such a meaningful piece in 4 days 😅😭 yeah, we did that!). I can’t wait until the universe allows us all to be in space together and hopefully share this piece again🤞🏽

Much love. I miss you all. CO|LAB 2026 🖤

After holding space and time for all that’s been unfolding in our communities, I’ve been feeling uncertain to post this… but as an artist I think it’s my duty to use my voice, so I decided to finally share this piece. I had the beautiful opportunity to choreograph, “When They Come For Us”, for VOICES: UNBOUND, alongside an incredible group of artists who helped build something rooted in truth, care, and community. I’m so grateful to Derrick, Kate, and the entire SGLA fam for creating space for marginalized voices to be seen, heard, and felt. And to my amiga, my sister en espíritu, my dancer, Teresa—thank you. Thank you for your power, your vulnerability, your rawness, and your truth. I couldn’t have done this without you. This dance piece explores the profound emotional journey of immigration—unearthing the darkness, fears, and anxieties that often shadow the lives of immigrants and their children. It begins with the burning of sage, a ritual act of remembrance and protection, as the dancer moves through shadows of displacement toward light, identity, resilience, and hope. Rooted in Latinidad and ancestral strength, When They Come For Us, is both a mourning and a celebration—a danced prayer for those who came before and a fierce offering for those still finding their way during these hard times.
