She was 3.5 months when I moved her to NOLA for the shoot of Goodbye Girl. I was still breastfeeding, and at that point I loved every moment of it (those who’ve been following my nursing journey know it wasn’t an easy one).

I planned to fully wean when she turned five months — a month before production. As that day got closer, I found myself looking at her every time she nursed, quietly saying goodbye to that unmatched connection between us…

The day before she turned five months, something in me shifted. I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t look at my baby’s little body and choose not to give her my whole. She was also just getting over her first cold, and I felt like my milk was one more thing helping her through it. I couldn’t decide to wean.

And then, the most unbelievable thing happened.

The morning of her five-month birthday, I woke up dry. No more milk. As magically as it came, it was gone. The universe decided (as it always does) what was best for me.

A week ago, Maika got sick for the second time in her life, and in that moment, I found a small treasure — two last frozen bags of breast milk I didn’t even remember existed.

This photo is her drinking the very last one.

I will miss breastfeeding you until the day I die. ❤️ taken in Los Angeles, California by @oranzegman

🚂✨ Episode 4 is here! A brand new BE THE TRAIN PODCAST is now live on YouTube!

This week, we’re joined by super successful director @oranzegman — the director of Honor Society, starring @angourierice. 💫

Oran is a Los Angeles–based filmmaker and proud alumna of the American Film Institute. She burst onto the scene with her feature debut Honor Society for Paramount, starring Angourie Rice and Gaten Matarazzo, which The New York Times hailed for its dazzling sophistication. Her short musical Marriage Material—a Fox Searchlight acquisition and Student Academy Award finalist—is now being developed into a feature. On the TV side, she directed episodes of Paramount+’s hit series School Spirits. Most recently, she welcomed her best creation yet—her firstborn daughter, Maika—while gearing up to direct the Amazon romantic comedy Goodbye Girl, starring Kiernan Shipka, with production beginning in January 2026.

In this episode, Oran opens up about the realities of the career grind, the courage it takes to face your fears, the importance of celebrating small wins, and how to unlock your true creative potential — and BE the Train.

Before you give birth, no one tells you about the journey of breastfeeding.
All you hear is how wonderful it is, how important, how it bonds you with your baby…
and it does. But not right away.

Before it gets pretty, it’s painful.
It’s exhausting.
It’s so damn frustrating.

When it doesn’t work, you feel like a failure. You panic. You cry. You cry more.
Then at 3 a.m. you spill the only ounce you managed to pump… and you cry so fucking hard.

You feel like a terrible mother for not having enough supply, or for (God forbid) considering combo feeding.

But after a few loooong weeks, it does get better.
And then you forget to tell your girlfriends about the journey.
And it is a journey. A long one. Your own one.

And you’re doing great.
You’re doing the best you can.
So talk about it. All of it.
