Donna Summer rehearsing at The Rainbow Room in London in 1977
Although marketed as a sex symbol, Donna was raised in a devout Christian household. She sang in church, was always deeply religious and enjoyed singing inspirational music. Her faith gave her hope as a little girl even though she suffered a traumatic sexual assault by her childhood pastor. Her first husband was violently abusive.
Donna’s international mega-hit, “Love to Love You Baby” was a pulsating disco dance anthem with sixteen minutes of sultry moaning and groaning and emulating love making. This version was so erotic that it was banned by many radio stations. Later she stopped performing it live as it was at odds with her spirituality. Although it was not public knowledge, Donna suffered from depression as so many creative artists do and she eventually stopped attempted suicide in 1976.
However, Ms. Summer was a giant hit maker for two decades. She won five Grammy awards and made history in 1979 by being the first female solo recording artist to record four number- one singles in the United States within a thirteen month period. She was also the first artist to have three consecutive double albums reach number one on the Billboard album chart. It’s estimated that this complex entertainer sold 130 million records worldwide.
In a sad stroke of ironic fate, Donna Summer, who never smoked a cigarette, died of cancer at the age of 63.
