Orchestra Q wishes everyone a happy Pride and a happy summer! One year ago today, Orchestra Q came out and what a whirlwind year it’s been! We are so grateful for all the incredible artists, collaborators, and venues we’ve had the pleasure of sharing a space and a stage with.

A live orchestra and an underground DJ just took over SculptureCenter. a raw industrial space in Long Island City that used to be a trolley repair shop.

Stravinsky. Bach. Beethoven. Woven into one continuous set with sampling, looping, and producer-driven transitions by QWEENJD.
No seats. No rules. Just stand, move, and feel it.
And then the DJ after party hit.

I’m no longer part of After Arts, but despite breaking with that organization, many friendships I made there persist. One of the great gifts of participating was meeting @its.evading, who has become a dear friend. She’s not only a flaming-hot flutist but also someone with major aspirations and the ability to inspire others. I remember talking to her about how difficult it is to make it in the arts, suggesting a patron structure for her @koeduo with Emma Kato, and she came back with, “I’m going to start an orchestra!”

@OrchestraQnyc is her brainchild: a troupe of awesome young musicians of her generation who come together to put on interesting multidisciplinary shows in Queens, where she lives. She noted that there was a dearth of classical ensembles compared to Manhattan and Brooklyn. I made it to their debut concert at a nightclub but missed the last two, so I was relieved to make it to the one this past Sunday.

This time the concert was in an art space, @sculpturecenter. In the large open space, we opened with some music provided by @djaball. The ensemble was composed of three violinists, two violists, two cellists, and a string bass, as well as Eva on flute and sax, an oboist, a French horn, a trumpet, and a keyboard.

If I understand correctly, the music for the evening was orchestrated by @qweenjd, who not only has the chops to arrange tracks of music but has the musical knowledge to reconstruct familiar tunes from Beethoven, Bach, and Stravinsky, and even the Bruch Violin Concerto, a beloved piece that almost every advanced violinist learns as they grow up. Shaleah, in particular, just ripped it, but it was fun to see all three violinists exchanging riffs from the concerto.

The evening was complemented by the amazing moves of two dancers, @fabricioseraphin and the gorgeous @vvviictoriiaaa.

As Eva said, this is not your mom’s Sunday afternoon orchestra concert!
