Start of October blooms: Paphiopedilum spicerianum, Bulbophyllum Elizabeth Ann 'Buckleberry', and Cleisocentron gokusungii. Okay, so the Paphiopedilum is a bit of a cheat, since I bought it in bloom at the local garden center. Two splashes of colour for late September, both blooming for the first time for me: Rhyncholaeliocattleya Memoria Hazel Glover and Odontioda Lovely Morning. Memoria Hazel Glover has an odd, vegetable, decidedly unfloral fragrance. Last day of school. A celebratory goodbye with some amazing kids. I always get a little misty, and this year was no different. Cattleya mossiae semi-alba seems to have decided to delay its flowering this year to offer a particularly floriferous celebration on this very day. Four flowers from one pseudobulb. Spent the day at the Bangsbo flower festival. I had to take home this gorgeous Disa hybrid from @michaeltibbs5566 - its fabulous bright pink colour called to me from the lavish orchid display. I forgot to ask for a tag, but I'm tempted to say that Disa racemosa makes up a significant portion of its DNA.

Also, flowering in my windowsill: Cattleya Shipbuilder's Oatmeal Stout - one of my most reliable Cattleyas. I've had it for 8 years, and in all that time, I believe it's only skipped flowering once. This year, the flower is particularly large.

Cattleya schroederae flowering for the first time. The flowers of this Colombian species are typically a very pale lilac (darker flowered clones exist but are rare), but make their presence known by a heady, complex perfume that you notice as soon as you enter the room. Cattleyas rarely flower at their full potential on the first attempt, but I will say that I am pleased with the shape of this one.

Also, three flowers are now open on my Disa uniflora!

Disa uniflora - the Pride of Table Mountain - is a remarkable South African terrestrial orchid with cultural needs quite unlike most orchids grown by hobbyists. Mine sits in water year round and I try to keep it on the cooler side.

Also: Oncidium/Odontioda Oedipus is now fully opened, and it is GORGEOUS! Rich purple colour with blood red markings and that classic Odontioda shape. And again, doesn't seem as fussy as some hybrids with Odontoglossum crispum DNA.

The Odontiodas have taken well to their new surroundings, exploding in bright patterns of pink, purple, and deep red. Odiontiodas also come in hues of orange, yellow, burgundy, and even pure white. The hybrids here all have Odontoglossum crispum (now Oncidium alexandrae) in their DNA, but are generally more forgiving, though they are still cool growing.

Obviously, beautiful flowers are a great passion of mine. But I also love scary movies. One of my favourite things I get to do at work is an annual horror movie project for our 4th through 6th grade pupils. I write a script based one the types of roles they would like to play, we spend a few weeks shooting, I edit the the whole thing together, and then we screen it for the parents. The premiere was last night. And I was presented with a lovely bouquet afterwards. I'm no good at being in the spotlight in my own person. But I love flowers. And I love scary movies. by @orchidsforkim

Two dramatically patterned Odontiodas in bloom. I bought the larger as Phoenix Way x Diablo's Drum, though I have considered if it might actually be John Miller. The smaller is Star Trek x Patricia Hill - its size being the result of a setback. Bonus: A poorly shaped but nicely coloured flower on Cattleya Sapphirata coerulea, Paphiopedilum Rosy Dawn, and an American Hybrid Paphiopedilum - which I had to take home from the flower shop because it looked like a satellite disc. #odontioda #cattleyasapphiratacoerulea #paphiopedilumrosydawn #paphiopedilumamericanhybrid #orchidselfie by @orchidsforkim
