Earlier this year, @harryconnickjr marked what would have been his mother’s 100th birthday by debuting a piano concerto at Carnegie Hall. “Babe: Elaboratio” is a symphonic biopic of his mother, a child of Jewish immigrants who became one of the first female judges in New Orleans.

Why choose between classical music, Shakespeare, mariachi, and ballet, when you can combine them all? The @austinsymphonyorchestra (ASO) used creative community collaboration to plan school concerts with a local focus. “Midsummer in Marfa: A West Texas Fairy Tale” featured the ASO alongside @mariachilasaltenas, @ventanaballet, @austinshakespearecompany, and more, with arrangements by Texas composer Federico Chávez-Blanco.

What a “vision” to behold! Drawing inspiration from quantum mechanics, vision care, color blindness, dyslexia, and the Hubble Space Telescope, @leannacomposer’s VISIONS was premiered by @rocohouston and conductor @delyana.lazarova last weekend.

Happy National Arts in Education Week! At Dakota Middle School in Minnesota, high school musicians from Southeastern Minnesota Youth Orchestras (@semyo_orchestra) teach sixth grade beginners. These small group lessons are some of the younger students’ first private lesson experiences—and some of the high schoolers’ early teaching and leadership opportunities.
