While clerking remotely for the American Forest Resource Council, third-year Law Duck Law Claire Sebree gained hands-on experience in environmental law, federal regulations, and forest management policy.

At AFRC, Sebree helped write and edit legal briefs and draft memorandums on developments in environmental law. She also presented to the organization's executive board and members at its summer meeting.

The experience strengthened her legal research and writing skills while exposing her to the fast-paced demands of legal practice. "AFRC's legal team is extremely skilled at flexibility and multitasking, managing a large number of cases and intervening on behalf of its members," Sebree said. "My supervising attorneys helped me be more dynamic, balance working efficiently with careful analysis, and incorporate feedback quickly into my work product."

Working for an organization that represents timber and logging companies gave Sebree a new perspective on environmental law. "It helped open my eyes to systemic issues within federal forest management and, more broadly, environmental law," she said.

As wildfires continue to affect communities across the West, Sebree gained a deeper understanding of how forest management and sustainable timber production can help address those challenges. "Wildfires continue to devastate entire towns, destroying homes and taking lives. My time at AFRC helped me better understand how effective forest management and sustainable timber production work in tandem to address this systemic problem," she said.

A meaningful part of the experience was engaging with people who hold diverse perspectives on sustainable timber production and forest management. “These conversations reinforced for me that while approaches may differ, there is more common ground in protecting our forests, wildlife, and communities than it may appear at first blush,” she added.

For students interested in environmental law, Sebree encourages keeping an open mind during the summer job search. “Don’t be afraid to expand your horizons. Every legal opportunity offers experience and skill development that will ultimately make you a better environmental lawyer.” A person with curly hair sits at a desk with a laptop and notebook. Five reunion milestones. One great weekend. 💚💛

Oregon Law Alumni Weekend brought Law Ducks back to Eugene to celebrate 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 years—and make a few new memories along the way.

From following Oregon Law’s history across campus at the Pennoyer Fun Run/Walk/Roll to timely discussions at the O’Connell Conference and plenty of Duck spirit at the Law Duck Tailgate, there was much to celebrate.

Thank you to our alumni, students, faculty, friends, and generous title sponsor, Holland & Knight, for making OLAW 2026 a success. Once a Law Duck, always a Law Duck!

As a clerk at Garcia Law PLLC in Utah, third-year Law Duck Ted Jemming spent his summer practicing federal immigration litigation, removal defense, and criminal defense.

After observing immigration court proceedings, Jemming drafted two § 2241 habeas petitions challenging immigration detention in the Eastern District of California, prepared visa and asylum applications, and worked on criminal defense matters including suppression motions and cross-examination outlines. As a certified law student, he also appeared in Utah district and justice courts to enter arraignments and pleas for clients.

“I learned how to draft and file habeas petitions and reply briefs in § 2241 litigation, write for district judges rather than professors, anticipate the government's strongest arguments, and build a record that supports the relief requested,” Jemming said.

Beyond drafting, Jemming developed skills in fact development and cross-examination, preparing impeachment outlines from police reports for preliminary hearings and auditing asylum applications for consistency across family members.

“I learned to conduct client interviews with the help of a translator, negotiate with the government in a contested Equal Access to Justice Act fee dispute, and appear in both district and justice courts,” he said.

The summer also broadened Jemming’s perspective on his future career.

“When I began law school, I was focused on criminal law. This experience showed me how often different areas of law interact and gave me valuable experience in immigration and family law, both of which I now see as potential practice areas,” he said.

Jemming’s advice for future law students: seek opportunities that put you in real practice settings. “If you want to be a litigator, get court certified as soon as you can during your summer internship. It can make the difference between researching in the office and getting podium time in court,” he said. He also encourages students not to overlook smaller and mid-sized firms, where hands-on experience can come early and often. And no matter the assignment, take it seriously. by @oregon_law

This summer, Oregon Law welcomed visiting scholar Dr. Benjamin Liu, Senior Lecturer in Commercial Law at the University of Auckland Business School. 🇳🇿

Dr. Liu holds a PhD in law and is admitted as a solicitor in New Zealand, England, and Wales. Before entering academia, he worked at international law firms and banks, including Linklaters and BNP Paribas. A legal expert in artificial intelligence law, insolvency law, and financial markets law, Dr. Liu frequently speaks to the media and appears in news coverage on issues at the intersection of finance, technology, and law.

“During my time at Oregon Law, my research focused on third-party releases in insolvency restructuring, and I also had the opportunity to sit in on several law classes. I very much enjoyed my time in Eugene. It is a lovely and friendly city that reminded me a little of Auckland, with great weather and squirrels everywhere, which I found particularly charming.” 🐿️

Thank you, Dr. Liu, for sharing your expertise with Oregon Law. We wish you all the best in your future research and teaching. by @oregon_law

Meet Surya Barrow, attorney, educator, nonprofit leader, small-business founder, and member of Oregon Law's incoming Master of Laws (LLM) class. ⚖️

Building on a career centered on public service and community building, Barrow is pursuing the Environmental and Natural Resources Law track with plans to develop new tools for environmental advocacy and law practice.

Inspired by a lifelong connection to the ocean and time spent along the Oregon coast, Barrow credits the ocean with her journey back to law school, where she will specialize in ocean advocacy alongside other environmental causes.

“In the pause between closing my practice in Texas and coming to the University of Oregon LLM program, I took some time to walk along the ocean at Agate Beach. Hearing the waves, feeling the sand and chill water, reminded me of this passion—and commitment—within myself,” Barrow explained.

After nearly a decade as a federal trial attorney with the IRS Office of Chief Counsel, Barrow founded a yoga studio, led a nonprofit serving people living with serious mental illness, and established a solo practice representing children, parents, and people navigating child welfare and mental health proceedings.

At Oregon Law, Barrow will work on research and special projects with Professor Mary Wood and the ENR Center’s Conservation Trust Project. “While researching the Law School’s professors, I was especially drawn to Professor Wood’s work. My practice in Texas focused in large part on advocacy for children. I saw a beautiful dovetail of my work on behalf of children and activism for the environment in the Conservation Trust Project,” she said.

“I am here to serve the causes I believe in, to the best of my abilities. I know I will acquire meaningful skills here at Oregon Law with which I can more creatively, expertly, and elegantly serve environmental causes.”

Welcome, Surya! 👏 🌊 by @oregon_law

Meet Emily Wangen, a member of Oregon Law's incoming Master of Laws (LLM) class. 🌿

Pursuing the Environmental and Natural Resources Law track, Wangen hopes to build a legal career helping steward public lands for future generations.

Wangen joins Oregon Law from the University of Wyoming, where she earned a JD and MA focused on environment and natural resources. Her passion for environmental and natural resources law deepened while conducting legislative research and drafting for the Wyoming Legislative Service Office.

"Through that experience, I saw firsthand how natural resource management decisions shape the culture and economies of communities," Wangen said. "As I began my legal education, I held those lessons close."

At Wyoming, Wangen focused her coursework, research, and extracurricular activities on environmental and natural resources law, with a particular interest in public lands and water law. She also served as a law review editor, competed in national environmental moot court competitions, conducted land and water law research through the Gina Guy Center for Land and Water Law, and worked on land-use and water issues with the City of Aurora, Colorado.

At Oregon Law, Wangen looks forward to deepening her expertise in Western water and public lands law, expanding her knowledge of environmental law frameworks, and applying her skills through the ENR Center's Oceans, Coasts, and Watersheds Project. She will also collaborate with Professor Adell Amos on research and special projects.

Welcome, Emily! 👏🌎 by @oregon_law
