Let’s check in with Yolanda!

“I’m at UW Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. The study we see the most of is LE DVT exams in our inpatient side and LE Arterial and Mesenteric exams in our outpatient side. My favorite exams to scan are fistula’s and ophthalmic nerve sheath imaging over in the TCD department. The most interesting study I have seen was a patient that had a right ECA to VA saphenous vein bypass graft who presented with the right ECA stenosed and a right CCA to the previous saphenous vein jump graft was placed. I wish I would have known that we take more than just the image required from the protocol when pathology is identified. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, you’re still learning and not every patient is the same.”

Senior Spotlight!🌟
Let’s check in with Jazzy!

“I am working at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California. I rotate between the main hospital and the outpatient clinic.
Majority of the scans I see are lower extremity veins to rule out blood clots. But I would say my favorite exam we do is carotid ultrasounds specifically when they have had a stent placed.
I have seen lots of cool things, but my most interesting exam was a mycotic aneurysm I found in the carotid artery caused by recurrent salmonella infection! It was 4 cm x 5 cm!
Something I wish I knew before extern is that it is going to be mentally exhausting for the first few months and it will take time to adjust! You must give yourself grace and you aren’t going to remember everything and that’s ok!”

Senior Spotlight!🌟
Let’s check in with Elvis all the way in Alaska!

⭐️What site/hospital/clinic are you at?

“I’m at Alyeska Vascular Surgery in Anchorage and Palmer, Alaska”

⭐️What study do you see the most of? (and/or) What is your favorite scan you have been able to do so far?

“I would say it’s a toss-up between arterial legs and Arteriovenous Fistulas but there’s still a lot of variety, so I’m always kept on my toes. My favorite scan would probably have to be reflux exams!”

⭐️What has been your most interesting study you have seen so far?

“This a tough one because I feel like I see so many interesting studies, but off the top of my head, it would be scanning a kidney transplant.”

⭐️Anything you wish you would have known before extern?

“I wish I knew many things before extern, but in that same vein there are some things that you must learn while on extern. Just remember to have fun, be open to new experiences, and take every hard scan as way to learn and apply new techniques 😋💕 “

Let’s check in with Kirsten!

“I am at Kaiser Permanante in Santa Clara but the techs are subcontracted with Mint medical so I have also gone to Oakland for a little bit.

The exams we see the most are lower extremity venous insufficiency and hemodialysis access. My favorite studies are bypass grafts because the anastomosis sites can be hard to see and you don’t always know what vessels are being utilized.

My most interesting studies have been an innominate
to carotid artery bypass and then carotid to Axillary artery bypass which was completely occluded and the patient was somehow still getting flow to the hand, via small collaterals we can’t see on ultrasound. I have also seen several cases of massive mobile thrombus in the CFA.

Something I wish I knew before extern is that our job as techs is to answer the clinical question, that means the images should show exactly what’s going on and why.”

Senior Spotlight Sunday🌟
Let’s check in with Ireland, all the way in Texas!

“Hey!
I’m at Vascular Institute of San Antonio in Texas. The most common studies I’ve done are ABIs, carotids and lower extremities DVT. Most interesting study I have seen is a post status carotid body tumor removal with the ECA being sacrificed. Or a Rt CCA to Lt ICA bypass behind the esophagus.
Something I wish I had known before my externship would probably be what equipment I was going to be scanning with. Also helpful is getting the protocols before hand to review before starting.“
