Windows serve several purposes. They offer a glimpse of the outside world while keeping a room enclosed and secure. They provide natural light during the day and can be opened to allow for the circulation of fresh air. Yet, as uplifting as the view from a window may be by day, it can become equally ominous once darkness falls—when, suddenly, the interior becomes visible to anyone looking in from the dark. At the same time, the presence of windows compromises a building’s security; they represent a weak point that can easily be breached. While a room without windows is naturally a claustrophobic experience, such a design may be necessary for security reasons—whether to keep things out or to keep things in, as is the case with shelters or prison cells. It is also a requirement for a darkroom, where sunlight would be utterly destructive.
When it comes to determining whether a building is abandoned or not, it is often the broken windows that reveal it.

There is a vast difference between the feeling that washes over you when exploring abandoned homes and when exploring abandoned industrial sites. Silence is, of course, present in both instances. Yet, while it feels soothing in a defunct factory—testifying to the absence of activity—it feels unsettling in a former home. After all, a home can easily be silent even when it isn’t abandoned.
As a child, I often found the silence I encountered when visiting elderly people to be ominous. It held a certain claustrophobic quality that was hard to explain. That silence was further intensified by the presence of an old clock ticking away the seconds, transforming the stillness into a thunderous symphony of everything moving inexorably toward an end.

A house without doors cannot be considered a home, just as a house with only locked doors can be nothing but a prison.
As a symbol, the door holds deep psychological significance. It represents the threshold that must be crossed for change to occur. Doors may be hidden or locked to keep the mind blind to certain aspects of reality. Yet, anything hidden can be found, and any lock can be opened. But even when such obstacles are overcome, we may still hesitate to step into the unknown. Are we ready for what awaits on the other side of this threshold? This hesitation is the very essence of our free will, and our choices shape our future reality—whether we choose to move forward or turn away.

Doors can be opened and closed; they can be locked or unlocked. They form a boundary between the outside and the inside, or between rooms, serving to keep things either out or in.
But doors also hold symbolic meaning. We close a door behind us and throw away the key when we need to move on, or we kick a door down when we have had enough of being kept out.
We also have a need to open the doors of perception to try to expand our understanding of the reality we inhabit.
And that is precisely a key part of the experience one gains when passing through these doors—moving between the abandoned and forgotten and the world outside.
