Ever since the Stars and Stripes article was published highlighting the plight of military spouses stranded overseas, my social media channels have been absolutely inundated with stranded spouses reaching out for help, ready to tell their stories.

First of all, if you are a stranded spouse, or if you have been through a military divorce at all, please fill out the intake form from Silent Ranks Alliance, one of the many organizations I’m working with now as we spearhead a huge initiative calling for congressional oversight, a Department of Defense Inspector General review, and everything else we can do to end this problem of overseas dirty discards once and for all.

And I want to take a minute to share something I’ve learned from my friend, Organizer Jen, about how complex problem solvers think and work.

I’ve described in many cases how Jen and I are both neurodivergent, and in many ways, we don’t see problems as personal—most of the time. We see problems as messes that can be cleaned up, as long as we approach them systematically and continuously gather data as we go.

And that’s really what I want you to understand about my social media channels.

So much is happening with our Stranded Spouse Project since the Stars and Stripes article was published!

I’m getting messages from stranded spouses almost all day now, while continuing to publish my memoir in real time, The Gutter Catholic Goes Home.

I actually wrote Chapter 42 overnight and then published it Sunday after a conference call with some advocacy groups. And the interviews, intake calls, and coordination conferences with advocacy groups continue to keep us very busy.

I get up early anyway, but lately, getting up early has been so advantageous because I can get on calls with people in Europe almost immediately.

And what that means is that I’m so excited because I can get so much work done!

But I’m also getting exhausted.

So I’m going to sleep now.

Jen and I egg each other on, and we keep each other working. I’m actually forcing myself to sleep, even though I’d rather be out working with Jen, because we find work really exciting and interesting.

But so much is happening with this project!

Jen was the only person who was allowed in to help me, year after year, duty station after duty station. And so we have a good friendship.

And we’re both weird. We’re both neurodivergent, and it’s just great to have a friend who clicks with you.

The kids are loving having Jen here. Of course they remember her! She always took such genuine interest in their lives, and she still does.

Organizer Jen is on the Oregon coast! 🌊

This is her FIRST time on the West Coast, and she has already met some seals. She is now very excited about making a seal friend.

Of course she is. 😂 We love animals.

We have all kinds of content planned for you while Jen is here. We’re going to organize stuff. We’re going to talk about stuff. She’s going to help me get a LOT of stuff done. And we’re going to bring you along for our weird little adventures because Jen and I think we are fabulously interesting people.

“Because we are,” says Jen.

Jen is also really interested in mushrooms, so naturally she has already been taking pictures of mushrooms. We’re going hiking. We’re going kayaking. We’re exploring the Oregon coast.

And I am going to prove to this Pennsylvania woman that YES, the Pacific Ocean looks different than a river. 😂

Also, a reminder: tomorrow I’m live with Trey Gonzalez at 2 p.m. Pacific / 5 p.m. Eastern.

We’re going to talk about Trey’s experience as a victim of what we’re calling the Stuttgart Dirty Discard. Trey hasn’t seen his son in years, and he says he doesn’t even know where in the world his son is.

That is a story we need to hear.

So stick around. There is a LOT happening over here—and in between the serious work, Organizer Jen and I are going to nerd out about mushrooms, seals, organizing, the Oregon coast, and whatever else we stumble into.
