There are some things that a person would rather not write about, but nonetheless feel obliged to as a result of conditions reaching a point where the case for not breaking one’s silence becomes increasingly weaker than the case for breaking it.

Throwing caution to the wind: The following is a link to a revised and expanded version of a once semi-private essay penned several years ago. It addresses the ongoing compulsion towards the ubiquitous prohibition and removal of taboo elements within various realms of art, culture, media, and academe; delving into how such censorship (including self-censorship) has resulted from sundry moral panics and mass hysterias increasingly propagated by the social order and power elite.

A brief glimpse through the keyhole of topsy-turvy hypermodern existence, probing the open-ended question of how the psychological enjoyment of guilt, fear, and group narcissism/sadism came to replace the enjoyment of freedom within today's so-called "underground".

Silence is a Sharpened Blade speaks in the language of materiality — a stripped bare mantra of nylon and wood conjures unspoken and veiled interiors, channeling the intimacy of a single guitar alone in a room. Silence is a mirror, a shadow, an absence. It speaks when words fail in the poetry of negative numbers. Where do we go when the lights burn out? What is beauty in hell? What can pierce a heart of stone? Silence is a teacher, a doorway, a paradox. Silence is a sharpened blade.

Jack Wright (b. 1942) is a musician described as playing "post-electronic saxophone, and dedicated to to free playing since 1979. Described thirty years ago as an "undergrounder by design," he is a veteran improviser based mainly in Philadelphia. .

Evan Lipson Evan Lipson (b. 1981) has lived with the incurable disease of music since early adolescence, seeking the liminal realms in which intellect and instinct, history and myth, and creative and destructive force intersect.

Jonah Gelbart is an improviser, composer, system-builder based in the greater Philadelphia area, playing trumpet and shofar. He plays everything from classical, straight-ahead jazz, new music, to free improvisation.

Bill Harris is a percussionist, improviser, and audio engineer in Chicago. He also operates and produces for Amalgam, a Chicago-based label and collective, and co-operates Chicago recording studio and performance space Marmalade.

Carol Genetti is a Chicago-based vocalist whose work encompasses sound and visual art media. Her palette is primordial, existing in a space where “language” and “music” have yet to be formulated into familiar cultural patterns.
