Some photos Josh took in my living room this spring. He made being photographed as painless as possible for someone who prefers being behind the camera. Gracias 💌 by @orianavanpraag

When the U.S. attacked Venezuela on January 3rd, it killed more than eighty people, including civilians. Their deaths, I wrote in The New Yorker this week, were shrouded in secrecy and greeted with ambivalence.

Acknowledging how many people were killed would have undermined the Trump administration’s claim of a “surgical” law enforcement operation. The body count didn’t make the Venezuelan government look very good, either. Its new president, Delcy Rodríguez, was reluctant to admit that many of the victims were Cuban agents, whose presence in the country her predecessors had repeatedly denied.

In Venezuela, news of the deaths were drowned by overwhelming joy over Maduro’s capture. The demise of Venezuelan military officers elicited little sympathy, and that of Cubans even less. Even the passing of civilians was sometimes justified. It was collateral damage, the price to pay for the dictatorship to fall.

But devaluing human life extends Maduro’s reign of terror, instead of breaking from it. With more military interventions on the horizon, in Venezuela and beyond, it’s important to recognize that ordinary people suffer the brunt of battles they have no control over.

My homesickness has grown spines. Perhaps because Venezuelans keep being detained and deported, and I keep trying, unsuccessfully, to write about it — driven by a desire to transform my pain into something useful, but also hoping to advance my own career by exploiting it.

It’s been ten years since I left the country, a year and a half since I last saw my family. Being away this long, I no longer feel estranged from the past, but like I never had one.

When I look at these photos, taken with my first camera during my last year, I remember that it was once my home. And I was witnessing the beginning of the collapse. taken in Caracas, Venezuela by @orianavanpraag
