“The NDIA has currently declined my permanent power wheelchair application that I need to function, and expects me to go back to a manual wheelchair that I cannot physically propel” - Oriela Williams speaks on the cuts that NDIA are already making before this NDIS Bill even passes.

Hear Oriela speak at the Brisbane/Magan-djin/Meanjin National Day of Action protest on Saturday 1 August about their own experiences with the NDIS and sets a challenge to Mark Butler, Labor’s Disability Minister, to live one day in Oriela’s shoes.

We have to stop the cuts, the NDIS Bill must be scrapped! We have to keep fighting before the NDIS Bill returns to the Senate for a vote on 14 August!

We need every person who can to call Liberal, National and Independent Senators to tell them to change their vote and BLOCK THE BILL!

Go to our Linktree in our bio/comments to find a Calling Guide we have prepared to help you make calls.

Keep fighting, keep going! Speak your truths!

Community gathered with demands:
- Scrap the NDIS Bill!
- Stop the cuts, don’t put a price on our rights
- Don’t kick people off the NDIS, expand safeguards
- Tax the gas corporations and billionaires
- Expand disability services, human rights belong to all

Thanks to our speakers for sharing their stories and showing the real life impact of these cuts, and just how dangerous the NDIS Bill is:

We have prepared a Calling Guide to help you, with all the phone numbers, key points, and a script to help: go to our Linktree in our bio! Once we have recovered from today’s Day of Action, we’ll be running online calling parties so we can do this together. Keep an eye out on our socials!

We CANNOT allow this Bill to pass! Let’s make the government feel our power!

The Magan-djin team are so grateful to all our volunteers for making this day possible, especially our marshal team! Thank you for all the support from the Greens MPs with marquees, funding for our Auslan interpreters, and AV equipment, Socialist Alliance with marquees and @masks4magandjin for our masks. We have to scrap the NDIS Bill and stop these cuts!

Hear from Oriela Williams from Protect Our NDIS Alliance speaking at our online community forum held on Tuesday 14 July about why we must fight, and calling for everyone to join us on the streets for our National Day of Action on Saturday 1 August!

Check our Linktree to find all the details about the National Day of Action and how to get involved.

You can find the recording of our online community forum in full on YouTube at the link in our Linktree.

The recording has captions and transcript for the entirety, and Auslan interpretation for the majority of the time (recording error meant that some sections when slides were shared hid the Auslan interpretation, and we apologise for this error!).
You can also find the full pdf slides, and audio recording of the slides from Brianna Bell of Qld Advocacy for Inclusion linked on YouTube.

Thank you for the financial support from @jordonsteelejohn to ensure we could fund Auslan interpreters for this critical forum.

Let’s show the government our community’s power. See you on Saturday 1 August! ✊✊✊

The federal Labor government is attempting to cut $37.8 Billion from the NDIS; the single largest savings measure in the 26/27 federal budget. The bulk of this money will be taken directly from people’s support plans, especially Social & Community Access funding.

Oriela & Rowena from the Protect Our NDIS Alliance spoke to us about what this means for people with disabilities, the health system and the economy more broadly.

They’re holding a National Day of Action on Saturday 1st August in resistance to these cuts.

Click on Protect Our NDIS Alliance’s linktree to access more resources including actions you can take & further information about what is going on.

This video was created on the stolen lands of the Yuggera & Turrbal people. First Nations people are twice as likely to experience disability than non-Indigenous Australians and already face many barriers to accessing the scheme or using their funding. The proposed changes to the NDIS neglect to centre the needs of First Nations people or involve them in the development of new processes. LAND BACK. by @orielaa

“If I’m without my [NDIS supports], I would perish. I would cease to exist, and many participants are in the same position.” - Oriela Williams for Protect Our NDIS Alliance

At our hearing spot on Tuesday 9 June in Naarm/Melbourne, we prioritised sharing diverse lived experiences to highlight the impact of this terrible Bill on so many different groups of disabled participants.

The NDIS Bill grants sweeping power to the Minister of the day to cut funding up to 99.99% to support categories across the board, with no consideration of individual circumstances. That decision is not reviewable. There is no appeal.

Labor has already declared their plan to cut 50% of all Community and Civic Engagement Access funding across the board, and 10% of Capacity Building Supports.

The NDIA confirmed in their evidence to the Senate Inquiry on Thursday 11 June that they have done absolutely no modelling on the impact this will have on participants. They have solely looked at these cuts as a budget saving measure. For shame.

Listen to Oriela, a nonbinary Lebanese lesbian and NDIS participant, explain the impacts for them and other disabled participants if this Bill goes through as planned.

Right now, everyone can help stop this NDIS Bill from passing by contacting all your MPs at every level before 1 July to tell them to block the Bill! We encourage you to call Liberal and Independent Senators as a priority.

Let’s keep the pressure on!

We spoke truth to power at Tuesday’s hearing in Naarm/Melbourne! We hope we did you justice in sharing our diverse lived experiences as NDIS participants directly impacted by these cuts!

The evidence on Tuesday was very clear: the Bill must not pass. It is harmful, dangerous and the real risks to disabled people and families as participants are thrown off the NDIS when absolutely no alternative supports exist is far too high.

Want to save costs, government? Start by fixing NDIS internal processes and remove extensive waste, don’t take it out on our most vulnerable communities!

Our Protect Our NDIS Alliance speakers giving evidence to the Senate Inquiry were:
- Oriela Williams (they/them) @orielaa
- Andrew Bretherton (he/him)
- Grace Bell (they/she)
- Nicole Moran (she/her)

Learning that there was no videoconferencing for online speakers the night before the hearing, we made a cardboard stand in for our online speaker Nicole… check out the first photo for Nicole 2.0, and the second for Nicole 1.0. It was shameful Nicole and others attending online couldn’t be seen!

So many disabled voices were affected by this last minute accessibility info - we were so proud of our community rallying together to help two of the four @dpacaustralia speakers get there in person to give evidence and devastated that two could not be there and could only be heard (like Nicole) via phone!

Despite this, our disability community showed our strength and resilience, with the mood in the room that of fire and resistance. In this dark time, disabled joy is so powerful! We felt so uplifted in that space! The fight is not over.

There is videoconferencing for today’s hearing and tomorrow (Thursday’s) hearing in Canberra, and you can tune in at the link in our bio. Let’s bear witness to all the disabled voices rallying against this terrible Bill!

And keep the pressure on before 2 July: call your MPs at every level and tell them to BLOCK THIS Bill!

Grace is a white person wearing a dark jacket over a colourful long skirt, with a pink face mask and a sunflower lanyard. They are holding up a purple cardboard frame around their face with the text "Protect Our NDIS, Disabled people deserved dignity, Stop the Cuts, Fund care not war!" along the frame. Andrew is a white man with short brown hair in a power assist wheelchair. He is smiling. He is also holding the cardboard stand-in for Nicole. Nicole's cardboard stand-in (Nicole 2.0) is a painting of a green blob creature with googly eyes and a smiley face. Along the top of the cardboard is her name: Nicole. by @orielaa

"The proposed NDIS Bill must be rejected in full. Proceeding with the Bill is an irresponsible and dangerous course of action, with real risk and harm, including death, a guaranteed outcome.” - Oriela Williams for Protect Our NDIS Alliance

Listen to the Opening Statement in full from @protectourndis at Day 1 of the NDIS Senate Inquiry Hearings, delivered by @orielaa on Tuesday 9 June in person in Naarm/Mebourne. (No video because Day 1 didn’t have videoconferencing!!! 😡)

The fight isn’t over! We have one more day of Hearings today in Canberra from 9:30am AEST with proper videoconferencing. First up is ANPA! You can watch the evidence online at the link in our bio!

Excerpt:

“I'm Oriela. I'm a Disabled Lebanese Non-Binary Lesbian from Magan-djin/Meanjin/Brisbane and I use they/them pronouns. I'm an NDIS participant with high physical disability and psychosocial disability support needs. I am a full-time power wheelchair user living in Specialist Disability Accommodation / Supported Independent Living —also known as SDA-SIL—and need support with all personal care and activities of daily living, including toileting and showering, from daily caregivers.

When the government thinks of what a disabled person looks like, they think of someone like me. They think of someone who is in a wheelchair, and that is an equation that we have seen recently within the media.

But they don't think of someone like our other speakers—like people with invisible disabilities.

Disability is and always has been more than wheelchair users.”

The Bill must be rejected in full!

See comments for transcript of Oriela's speech.

Protect our NDIS! ✊✊ Thank you to everyone who made it in person to join us in solidarity in Brisbane/Magan-djin/Meanjin today. We had 250+ people there, and it warmed my heart! Thank you for bearing witness to all our speakers, I was honoured to be one of them. Thank you in particular to our lead local organiser @orielaa for wrangling press and speakers and so much else, and sharing your story as well.

Thank you to all the other speakers today as well:
- @jodie__hall__ who stepped in as @bizzibodyx was unwell
- @kathryndenny
- @archiearsenic
- @fridayology
- @janey_britt

And thank you to the marshalls, and all the volunteers who organised today’s rally locally! And especially Nibs who couldn’t be there today because they were unwell but did so so much in the lead up.

Because of some time constraints (for a great reason, we ended up having a press conference at the start which pushed everything back), I was not able to read the statement from the Long Covid community, so please read it at the @protectourndis link in my bio. We must bear witness for those with Long Covid and ME/CFS!

We sent a message today all around the country, that disabled people will not lie down and take this. Stop the cuts! Don’t put a price on our rights!
